Someone posted to here about our options at DT. I agree that this is a big area of need. Remember: Zach's strength lies in his ability to roam free while the big men up front occupy blockers. Remember how good this run Defense was when Bowens and Chester were runnin' the show? What was it, 18 straight games without a 100 yard rusher? Our run defense was impenetrable. Traylor has a year left, and at his age, I'd be surprised if he held up for all 16 games and maybe into the playoffs...?? That leaves Zgonina and Holliday as the veterans, and neither is a true behemoth NT that dominates the line. Wright and Vickerson, though talented, (most especially Wright), still need time to groom. I think that we are going to need a MONSTER DT in the mold of Bowens or Chester to realize the full potential of this defense. Zach is simply the best at what he does when he is allowed to roam free. My DREAM pick in round 1 is Haloti Ngata. No, it won't happen, but this guy is the next BIG thing; and I do mean big. Imagine Warren Sapp 40 pds. heavier and without the big mouth: A mountain of a man with seemingly unlimited strength, who can push the pocket as well as occupy 2-3 blockers at a time. I'm frankly frightened of the Bills taking Ngata at #8. We may have Ronnie Brown and now Fred Beasley, but if Ngata becomes the player he has the potential to be, he may re-define the position. I'm actually hoping that the Pack takes him at #5, or that he somehow miraculousy falls to the Browns at #12. In any case, I DO see that DB is a GLARING need, and there are SO many great prospects in rd.1. WR is tempting, too. But what does anyone think are the chances of us grabbing Bunkley or Watson in Rd. 1? Probably slim, but even a maybe...??:dolphins:

Yeah, those were some bad MFers. God, I miss the days when we had excellent lines. Well, Coach Huock is working on the offensive line and hopefully our defensive line has only improved.

I don't want us to get anywhere near Haloti Ngata. I think he's an underachiever.

Bunkley is the best defensive tackle in this draft in my opinion.

With Traylor, Manny Wright, Zgonina and Vickerson we are OK at tackle...not great though. I'd love to see us get a shot at Bunkley but he'll be long gone by #16.

I agree Bowens and Gardener were awesome together. Gardener was getting better and better each year until he started to have back problems. Gardener never got pushed around, even by big strong olinemen. Where Chester had some problems against some olineman.

Bunkley would be great but from all reports hes going before we have a chance to draft him, but if hes their I say take him. Without a doubt the DL postition is one that needs another playmaker and that is exactly what he gives us

Both Manny and Kevin looked good last year at times. I was all for Wilfork when he was there for Miami to take instead of Carey, but I think Miami is in much better shape up front now. I'd far rather have Winston Justice than Bunkley.

Exactly. A healthy Gardener and healthy Bowens were a terrific combo, strong and disruptive. Chester was strong but nothing else and he didn't apply his strength well, no ability to slide or tackle.

I'd love a young beast DT since IMO it's the most underrated position on the football field, shortening the play and making everyone else better in the process. As a USC alum I knew our defense was doomed last season without the three studs from 2004 -- Cody, Patterson and Wright. The Canes would have several fewer NCs minus the likes of Jerome Brown, Cortez Kennedy, Russell Maryland, Vince Wilfork, etc.

We need a nose tackle. Bowens wasn't one, and Chester probably doesn't have it anymore. Neither one would help in this case unless we ran a base 4-3, which we don't.

Maybe, but Saban's scheme no longer is predicated on ZT being freed up. It relies more on pressure and gap responsibilities of all seven of the DL and LB. That was the Bates/Wanny/JJ D that you are referring to. While a true NT is fastly becoming a need position due to Traylor's age, Zgonina did a good job of filling in and this D can be flexed and altered to account for KT not being in there, particularly on passing downs. That is the beauty of the system. Pressure can be brought at any of the positions along the front 7. Ngata would be a great pickup for us, but no way should we entertain thoughts of trading up for him...Bunkley and Watson would be reaches, IMO, at #16...
