a panther on one series. That gives me hope. Armando says he had a bad game but I didn't see that. Dallas Thomas, while improving, still looks too soft/finesse - doesn't have that mean streak. I still say we desperately need Mathis. If you bring in Mathis for the left side, I think BT can and will develop into a strong guard. I think we can make that situation work. I don't have the same confidence in Dallas Thomas. Signing mathis would allow Dallas to continue to learn.

For a zone blocking scheme, you need finesse blockers.

For a man blocking scheme, you need mean streak maulers.

We're talking about two different things. You're talking about the play, and I'm talking about the players. Any run play is a physical play. But as your quote notes, the zone blocking scheme needs athletic o-linemen to "create a double team". The zone blocking scheme mauls the defense through initial double teams, and then 2nd level blocks.

As Chip Kelly explains, the inside zone "is a great equalizer. We are double-teaming a defensive lineman with a mathematical idea behind it. We have four legs and he has two legs, so we win." The zone blocking scheme "mauls" through superior numbers, not individual strength.

In other words, a man blocking scheme needs a mauler o-lineman to destroy the d-lineman in front of him, 1-on-1. But a zone blocking scheme needs mobile linemen, to destroy the d-lineman with a 2-on-1 blocking situation (and then disengaging for a 2nd level block, depending on how the linebackers move).

Since the zone blocking scheme often has 600 lbs pushing 300 lbs, the ZBS linemen don't have to be superior maulers. Instead, the ZBS demands that the linemen be mobile & athletic.

at this point, Mathis would be an expensive backup....yet with the potential of starting in 4-6 weeks. Miami is rounding out their starters this week.

I am less worried about the guard situation at this point than I am the LT situation. Not sure when Albert will be ready, but not expecting him at the start of the season. Fox is not the answer and now having a concussion puts more concern.

The Dallas Thomas haters went quiet for a while there. Now, because Turner (who has been very average while switching from LT to RG) makes a decent block, Thomas is a bum again.

If Dallas Thomas had been allowed develop as a left guard from day 1 as he should have been, he'd be a capable starter by now. As it is, he's behind the curve a bit but catching up. He may never be a pro-bowler but he's shown enough growth to give rational people some expectation that he can get the job done. I thought he's been very solid in the 2 preseason games so far. He was better than Fox, Turner and Pouncey in Game 1 and certainly better than Fox and Turner in Game 2.

I saw Thomas interviewed after practice on the team site and I was struck by how much more grown-up and confident he projected himself, compared to the giggling nice-young-man we drafted. Kid has toughened up (God knows he had to after the unfair abuse he got) and hopefully he can use that in his game.

Our obvious left tackle issue aside, Turner is the guy to worry about right now. Even though many NFL linemen started out as college left tackles, switching sides is not that easy for many of them. It's a left-brain-right-brain thing that many people struggle with, despite being great athletes. Jordan Gross on Sat equated it to learning to play baseball with the hands the other way. You understand all the techniques and timing, but it takes a long time to feel natural and maybe never will. I don't know what Turner's specific issues are, but right now it doesn't look very natural for him and only reps in the same spot are going to help that. God forbid the coaches start shuffling him around like they did with Dallas and set his development back.

You wanna see a mean streak in Thomas? Check out the Lamar Miller dump off pass for 30+ yards. Dallas finishes off his first assignment, then moves over to help out the tackle who was starting to give ground, and knocks the hell out the defender to the ground.

I saw Turner whiff a few times as well, still have hope for him but def seems like current weakest link.

Turner whiffed on three blocks on running plays in the first three series. Thomas showed a strong hand punch on nearly every passing play as well as good movement.

First mistake Dallas Thomas makes this board is gonna be so relieved.

Feels like a bunch of posters lost in the woods looking for a Dallas Thomas hate tree that was there 2 weeks ago but has either been chopped down or moved to another part of the forest.

Both have shown some improvement. Both need to get better. You can tell they're both working hard so I'm cautiously optimistic.
