The Dallas Thomas haters went quiet for a while there. Now, because Turner (who has been very average while switching from LT to RG) makes a decent block, Thomas is a bum again.
If Dallas Thomas had been allowed develop as a left guard from day 1 as he should have been, he'd be a capable starter by now. As it is, he's behind the curve a bit but catching up. He may never be a pro-bowler but he's shown enough growth to give rational people some expectation that he can get the job done. I thought he's been very solid in the 2 preseason games so far. He was better than Fox, Turner and Pouncey in Game 1 and certainly better than Fox and Turner in Game 2.
I saw Thomas interviewed after practice on the team site and I was struck by how much more grown-up and confident he projected himself, compared to the giggling nice-young-man we drafted. Kid has toughened up (God knows he had to after the unfair abuse he got) and hopefully he can use that in his game.
Our obvious left tackle issue aside, Turner is the guy to worry about right now. Even though many NFL linemen started out as college left tackles, switching sides is not that easy for many of them. It's a left-brain-right-brain thing that many people struggle with, despite being great athletes. Jordan Gross on Sat equated it to learning to play baseball with the hands the other way. You understand all the techniques and timing, but it takes a long time to feel natural and maybe never will. I don't know what Turner's specific issues are, but right now it doesn't look very natural for him and only reps in the same spot are going to help that. God forbid the coaches start shuffling him around like they did with Dallas and set his development back.
