We have the players to be a very good team this year, but if we only had the HC!
Williams nearly had a third touchdown, but Dolphins coach Joe Philbin errantly challenged an official's call that the second-year running back was stopped before the goal line after diving for the pylon. When officials reviewed the play, they determined Williams actually fumbled the ball into the end zone.

Instead of the Dolphins taking a 20-0 lead - or having a second-and-goal at the Carolina 1 had Philbin not challenged - the Panthers got the ball at the 20 after the touchback.
Philbin said it was a ''bad decision.''

The play was close . . . lets not pretend like he doesn't have a running back and coaches upstairs telling him to throw the flag. Philbin didn't immediately toss it out . . . he got the OK from upstairs. I'm not even the biggest Philbin fan but trying to blame him for this is pretty ridiculous.

It's preseason and I'm glad it happened . . . they can spend some time replaying that situation this week and go over consequences of certain outcomes. It's all good.

I've been pretty critical of Joe, but I'm not too upset about this one. Get this stupid **** out of the way in preseason. Might have been some lesson learned for the regular season. It seems someone up in the booth was pushing for the challenge or the coach yelling next to Joe was for it. Should humble them.

Philbin is decent when it comes to using his challenges. That's not the weakest part of his "game" by any stretch.

If this was Philbins first season id of been mad this preseason. We've seen enough of him kicking field goals and not challenging plays in the 3 other seasons to know this just isn't really how he's going to coach.

Straight outta Compton Joe Philbin!

In what scenario would they have taken a 20-0 lead? And we wouldn't have had the second and goal either because Riviera said he would have challenged it as well.

I always get a kick out of fan outrage towards coaches over challenges; 90% of your anger probably should be directed at, you know, the guy that fumbled the ball at the 6 inch line; and 7% should be directed at the officials for ****ing up the call to begin with...

This play illustrates why coaches challenges have no business being part of the game anyway. A few years ago they changed the rule to make sure all game changing plays get reviewed automatically: turnovers and TD plays. Here we have both a potential TD and turnover on the same play and its up to the coaches to challenge? Just get rid of this ****ing ********ness once and for all and allow the officials to replay anything and everything they deem fit.

I would imagine ,like almost EVERY team in the league, Miami has a guy up in the booth whose SOLE job is replay challenges. I would bet good money head coaches take their direction from that booth and how adamant they are or convicted about the play. Philbin has no real clear cut view of it and 99% of the time, the player involved sees things totally differently

As said it was a fast decision probably made by a coach upstairs. Hell I saw it on tv and my initial thought was that it was probably worth a challenge

We do, the eagles appointed our original guy as special teams coach a few years ago if I remember right

Also just to add to this, I was watching a stream from one of the NFL trucks and they don't go to commercial so you can hear them talk and stuff even when not on TV. You could hear the Carolina coach say "yea I was going to challenge it but he already threw the flag". So it's not like Miami was going to keep the ball either way there. It doesn't look great but like others pointed out that call likely came from someone else and not Philbin himself.

Miami loses the ball on that play regardless since Carolina would've challenged. Pointless thread tbh.

Didn't lose possession until pylon was hit, was across the goaline in order to even touch the pylon. Poor call by the ref, but would rather have opportunity to run goal line O and no challenge.

Wasn't Philbin nearly perfect on challenges his first three years? He's always played the challenge game smart. This is not something to harp on when it comes to his weaknesses. I think he deadpanned "great decision" when asked about it at halftime. That cracked me up.

I can't get upset over that challenge. I agreed with it and thought the ball hit pylon. Looked like a touchdown and was happy to see the red flag. Freak play, and certainly a weak case against philbin's "football accumen" in a preseason game.
