In 2009, McCown and Henne switch places.

I'm not a Henne hater. I think he belongs in the NFL. However, the reason I think the line up comes out this way is due to development and timing.

Realistically, I don't see Henne sniffing the field this year. This isn't because he doesn't belong, or that he won't be a good QB. The fact is, for a rookie to come in and start, well, it doesn't happen very often, and I don't think it happens this year.

With that assumption said, it comes down to development. Beck has the tools, and he has a year under his belt to adjust to the speed, stress, etc. of playing in the NFL. I believe we will see that there isn't a significant difference in the performance between Beck and McCown. If that is the case, the coaches will go with Beck because he has more potential to progress significantly, while McCown has probably already gone through his growing pains. (However, if McCown seriously outplays Beck, then he will start and #2 is up for grabs in 2009).

So if Beck starts and plays throughout 2008, he will be gaining experience, and will have every chance to progress. Unfortunately, Henne won't be progressing at the same rate as a backup.

I think that both may get their chance to shine, but in order for Henne to win the job, Beck has to fail first. I think Beck had a rough 1st year, but he has tools, no one doubted that last year. With an improved team, he'll probably get a little more time to throw, and he will have a better Oline, recievers, and RBs. The offense is young, but there is a lot of potential.

Now, I want to make this clear. I'm not hating on Henne. Fact is, they were both drafted around the same place in the draft, they probably are not significantly different in skill sets, ability, or potential. If they were drafted in the same year, the #1 would be truly up for grabs. But Beck will get his shot 1st due to timing.

Either way, we have a much better QB line-up and for years to come, unless we get the trade bug again.

agreed that is the way it should be mccown is the stop gap guy but all in all its beck and henne's team fro the future, but for now it is becks to lose which i doubt he will.

This is the assumption I'm under as well. If McCown starts the season, I think it will mean the regime has passed negative judgement on Beck, and it will mean that we should expect Henne to start next year or pehaps even late this year, depending on the circumstances.

Great post. I think people have been sleeping on Beck and think he is done now that we drafted henne. Personally I don' think thats the case. If the FO really wasnt sold on Beck they would have picked up a qb with our early 2nd rounder instead of possibly losing the chance to get a qb at all with our late 2nd.

I disagree. They have stated on a number of ocassions that upgrading the lines was their number one priority.

I think Henne will either be #2 or may even win the starting J-O-B outright.

Beck does not have any advantages in this competition. It is a new Offensive system. He actually has a disadvantage in that he was Cam's guy. I see McCown starting and Henne moving up to 2nd string before Thanksgiving if not sooner...

I'm sorry, but I think you are wrong. Henne has a big adjustment to make, and not just to a new offense. He has to adjust to the NFL. It is extremely rare for a rookie to come in and start right away. They would have to come in and play lights out, which probably won't happen with Henne. IMO a starting rookie is 1st round material, which Henne is not. But even 1st rounders don't just come in a get the job most of the time. It takes time to learn the job.

Like I said, if both QBs were rookies this year, it would be up for grabs. But 1 year in the NFL gives Beck a significant step up. He knows the speed, he's been practicing for several months with coaches, players, etc, and he's been studying the playbook.

Henne may win the job, I don't know. But I think it is extremely unlikely.

i agree completely, it'll be an open competition between Beck and McCown, with Henne given a chance too, but will have to absolutely blow everyone away if he wants to start the first game. Beck most likely wins the starting job with McCown there to go in if/when the going gets tough for Beck. and i think between Beck and McCown, whoever does the worse this year isn't going to be here next year. and then Henne moves up to 2nd QB and there'll be a great competition next year.

BP always goes with the veteran QB, and he will suggest to Sparano that this is the safest way to start the season. Given this assumption....

1. There is no way that Henne will start the first game of the season.
2. Beck will have to significantly outperform McNown to start the first game of the season.
3. McNown is the default starter for the first game.

I am not willing to make a prediction for game 2.

I've heard the Vet QB thing about BP too. However, I think it would be a poor strategy to start McCown over Beck if they are close just because McCown is a more experienced Vet. As a matter of fact, I think it would be asinine since it's clear that a 1 year Vet has more potential for improvement than a 6-7 year vet. In other words, if McCown = Beck at the beginning, my money is that by game 10 Beck is significantly better than McCown due to experience and progression if they give Beck the nod.

It would really suck to have Beck play as good or better (but not significantly better) during training camp, and to have McCown get the nod. Sounds like a good strategy for mediocrity. I hope BP and Sparano have more sense than that.

He already did. Have you just come out of a coma?

I think Beck had a rough 1st year,

Thats the understatement of the decade.

but he has tools no one doubted that last year.

I did after watching him play a few weeks. I was good on seeing behind center a little earlier than Cam was. But, even Cam had seen enough eventually.

With an improved team, he'll probably get a little more time to throw,

He wont be getting the full 10 seconds he needs like he got in that famed clip vs. Utah.

But Beck will get his shot 1st due to timing.

Exactly. He had those games last season and the several months he had with the coaches to himself before the draft. Everyone except a hundred or so people on this place have seen more than enough to know he isnt starter material this season. Maybe in another year or two, but by then if things go according to Parcells' plan, Henne will be the starter by then. Beck has to hope Henne fails to get his shot. McCown is clearly the starter this season unless Henne has a huge camp.

Right. So at what point are some people going to realize this is whats happening? Alot of us already have. In fact, outside of this place almost everyone realizes this already.

who cares what you think? you havnt even seen preseaon yet or mini camp...how are you making predictions before any footage or evidence?

this topic is pretty much pointless till we can see 2-3 preseason games

of course thats what the current depth chart is.

a 2nd round draft pick rookie wont be first ont he depth chart with no game experience... and as of now...Beck HAS to be the starter, untill he loses his job

For all the hating you do on Beck, have you ever stopped to look at the play of the veteran McCown? McCown has had SIX YEARS to show something. What has he done? He has thrown INTs at a higher rate than Beck. Completion %, fumbles, QB rating, etc, all similar to Beck. You are blinded by the hate.

But, unlike Beck, McCown has MOVED OFFENSES down the field. NFL offenses. Scored some points, won some games. McCown has done a few things in this league. You need to quit basing things on statistics.

On top of all of that, McCown was selected by Parcells to be on the team. He signed a FA contract under the decision of Parcells himself. So Bill mustve saw something in him that he liked him more than any of the other FA QBs available.

McCown hasn't done squat. He has sucked everywhere he has gone. He has peaked already. Why would you think that he will be any better here? Give Beck the same slack you want to give McCown.
