I am sure Incognito was doing much of this same crap with Martin last year because as he so proudly proclaims "I hate rookies".

But these texts and voicemails came shortly after Jake Long signed with the Rams. Jake and Incognito were (probably still are) best friends. The team lets Long go, Incognito loses his bestie, and they replace him with Martin.

Incognito already didn't like Martin (because he is/was a rookie and other reasons) and now him taking his best friends spot next to him sent him over the edge.

This is not an excuse for his actions but I think that this did play a role in why Incognito acts the way he does towards Martin.

You ever thought that Long hazed Martin last year?

I think this may play a big role in this. I'm not sure Long's role in this, but as far as Richie's possible view, he sees Martin "step up" and take over Long's spot, which in turn sends Long off the team.
Not likely that a person with Richie's mind is going to welcome Martin with open arms. He may have wanted to make Martin weak, to prove how big of a mistake getting rid of Long was.

I do remember Richie trying to kickoff a big "bringlonghome" thing on twitter...right before we gave him the boot.

Wanting your buddy lining up next to you is completely understandable, but once the move was done, move on, be a team mate and get to work with your new team mate...this is a team sport, after all.

Troll, this goes beyond hazing. This isn't about hazing and sorry if you don't see the difference between racism/threats and pranks.

I wonder if Long hazed Martin last season too. Or if he was in on this stuff.

I would love to hear Long weigh in on this but he probably will not. I figured he left Miami because he felt slighted by the regime not making re-signing him a priority and only gave an offer when another team had interest. Ireland should be fired for relying on the unstable Martin being his solution at LT. I don;t condone what Richie did by any means but it's obvious Martin had know issues all along add that with him not being a very good football player and it was extremely irresposible for Ireland to count on him. Although he would have been slammed on Finheaven, he sould have made resigning Long, getting McKinnie in the offseason or trading for Albert a bigger priority even if he had to overpay. Now his most important draft picks health hangs in the balance of a patchwork offensive line. I do not think there is much drop off between Martin and Clabo, both are equally as bad. Obviously there has to be some drop off between Cogs and Garner because with a very crappy line it seems like the staff is deathly afraid to play Garner (figured he could be tried at RT). If McKinnie gets hurt this will be very ugly if it isn't already. Ireland should be as good as gone but should at least be trying to bring someone in who could help.

For now the Dolphins continue to be an embarrasment and butt of all jokes nationally.

It's funny how when other teams suck they just suck but when we suck we have to see embarrasment after embarrasment. I love how posters are slamming the media for slamming us, open you eyes the Dolphins look pretty horrible through all this and I'm betting there is some truth to everything the media is saying. Come to grips with the fact that we cheer for the biggest circus in the NFL :).

How no other linemen have been signed is crazy to me.

Yeatman, Thomas and Watkins are the back ups.

Martin did not outplay Long. Long chose the rams over the dolphins. The dolphins plugged in who they thought would be the best man up. But this was never about Martin beating out Long and sending him off the team.

Just maybe Jake Long also hated spending 8 - 10 hours a day with Incognito, as well. Something was wrong in the O-line room and my hunch is that Long was aware. It can be very convenient to just sign elsewhere than to make a fuss of the problem and incur the putrid wrath of Incognito.

If Incognito hated Martin, and Martin was scared of Richie... Then why the hell would they hang out all the time? Just think about it...

Martin is a fat baby to be honest...richie is crazy as **** but he will play again for another team...I'm not sure martin ever will

The thing is, I actually got the sense Richie LIKED Martin. That's why I think all this was really a case of one guy not being able to read another guy...

I am convinced Richie is the kind of guy who uses disgusting, vulgar language as a form of communication with his friends... I've been around guys like that. I'm not a huge fan of that, but I've seen it, and I can see the distinction between that kind of behavior and true hateful, abusive behavior.

A few things really push me toward this theory:

1. The actual voicemails have not been released, only transcripts. I'd bet a good dime that the tone of the voicemails are a lot different than a lot of people are imagining in their minds. Most people assume that Richie was yelling these obscenities in a rage-filled tone. But I actually picture him saying these things in a sarcastic, playful tone. Those words written in text, devoid of context, inflection or tone are truly vile and horrific, but the change in tone alters the perception a bit. INTENT matters. Was there malice behind these words?

2. Richie appeared to be taken off guard by the release of these voicemails. The morning before they were released, Richie was demanding to have his name cleared by ESPN. Did he somehow forget that he tormented Martin? Did he expect Martin to be so fearful of him that he would never release the details? Richie is a dumb lug, but he can't be that dense. That leads me to believe that he honestly thought that he had a good relationship with Martin and that he thought Martin was taking his "ribbing" the same way other friends on the team, like Pouncey, did... in stride.

I am REALLY interested to hear Pouncey's take on all this, because I have an inkling that Richie spoke in just as vulgar ways with him that he did with Martin, but the difference is that Pouncey and Incognito had that kind of relationship where vile ****-talking will fly, whereas Richie was oblivious to the fact that not all people are made the same way. He was blind to how Martin took it. In life, it's important to know your audience...

It makes a lot of sense, but I don't even think Martin took it very seriously. Maybe Im way off but I think he did have a breakdown(demotion, pressure, fans calling him out, lockerroom in general) and went straight to his parents. Now if those messages end up in the hands of you're parents, who are both lawyers that hate to see their kid like that, that kind of **** storm emerges. All you need now is a media type who already dislikes Incognito... Wonder who would that be...

"Step Up" LOL. Martin could not hold Long's jock strap on his worst day. The only reason Long was released was because he didn't want to play for less money.

Long wasn't released he was a free agent and signed with St. Louis.
