I Think This is What is Going On with Vontae Davis.

Friday, Marshall and Sean Smith began each drill as the two outside corners, and Davis would only come onto the field with the Nickel package (with Davis on the outside and Marshall on the inside).

Marshall, a seven-year veteran with Arizona and Carolina, said “everywhere I’ve been, I’ve been on the outside and then on third down I come inside in the Nickel.”

Marshall will probably be relief for each corner and come in on passing downs. He may go to corner and let Sean play the slot guy but i don't see him replacing Vontae.

That's the problem. There have been no reports they're doing what you suggest they're doing.

You play players at the spots where they are the best. You don't want to put them in positions where they're not set up to be comfortable. Vontae Davis would not be comfortable in the roles you suggest.

OK I am wrong. I thought he was playing inside in nickel packages. Do you expect Marshall or VD to be the starting CB in base package? Didn't VD cover Welker last season, I for some reason seem to remember him doing a decent job?
 
Too early to say exactly what Richard Marshall is going to be but I don't think this has anything to do with a secret plan to shift Vontae to safety or even inside to the slot. Richard Marshall is a lot like Will Allen, who was a starter on the outside but always shifted inside to slot on nickel downs.

They paid Marshall quite a bit of money. They're looking at ways to get their money's worth.

Personally I don't think it's a great idea but that's beside the point.

I don't know about the first game, I'm inclined to say no Vontae did not cover Welker last year in that first game. I know for a fact he didn't cover him in the second game as I only just recently reviewed that game. Welker is the ultimate movable piece so the Patriots had him on the outside, inside, the backfield, etc. In the first half Welker had a tough time because Brady was uncharacteristically inaccurate. Bad throws everywhere. Vontae did break up one pass to Welker but that was just because Welker lined up as a perimeter receiver to Vontae's side. Nothing special there. Sean Smith also broke up a pass meant for Welker when Wes lined up on the perimeter to his side. Welker does most of his damage against slot corners (although he had a LOT more trouble against Will Allen than Benny Sapp) and especially safeties and linebackers.
 
i wouldn't be so surprised to hear marshall is getting looks at free safety in base formations in a few weeks
 
vontae not on the field in 2 wr sets not a good idea...i don't care what richard marshall used to in the past...your inviting teams to attack both your boundary cbs even more on early downs...

if your an oc and you come out in a 2 wr set and you see vontae is not in the game your gonna attack the cbs in the passing game with your two wrs...audible out of stuff etc to go after them...your gonna find out just how comfortable marshall and smith are...i guess if you run some cover 2 you can try to offset it more but then they'll just run the ball downhill when they see your 2 safeties so deep and get into short downs and distances anyways...
 
This whole Vontae thing is being blown outta proportion anyways. Only person saying ANYTHING is Ben Volin.
 
it is a good idea though to get marshall some reps on the boundary in case you have an injury or something...
 
vontae is probably one of the best overall corners in the league. I get where the thread maker would say that he could see us using him in a charles woodson role. Charles roams, and he is a great tackler as is vontae. vontae is the ideal nickle corner in the slot. You want him around the ball because he's so good at breaking on the ball. Notice in the game where he had a 2 picks on brady, he was lined up in the slot. he can cover wes welker, and is one of the few that can. Its a good idea to have marshall practice against the ones in 2 wr sets because when its time to play the patriots again, you want vontae in the middle of the field because he's our best PLAYMAKER on defense. you dont just line your best playmaker on the outside, you put him in positions to make PLAYS! If this is the case, which i think should be, I like our defensive coordinator even more.

Yup!! ... Sean Smith doesn't have any hair on his az ... all been scorched off repeatedly!!

So Vontae's gonna sit ... watching SS bald butt, missed tackles, & stone hands .... yeah riiiiiiiight!!! Coyle ain't gonna last doin' that!! lol
 
wow, that is crazy, this world has gone mad i swear, geez. My thoughts and prayers go out to VD's family. This type stuff is senseless.
