I would make a trade with the Raiders

I am sure everyone is figuring that trading with the Raiders means that we trade up, but I am suggesting a different approach to get the most value out of the #9 pick. At #9 we are going to get a good player but not a player that will get us to the Super Bowl anytime soon, but I would offer them our #9 overall for the following:

Oakland's 2nd rounder #33. This is basically a late first round choice since it is the first pick of the 2nd round.

Swap #4's with Oakland giving us the first pick on day 2.

Oakland's 1st round pick next year - 2008.

Overall we would get the 33rd pick in this draft, the first pick on day 2, and pretty much a top 3-5 overall pick next year in 2008.

Why would we want to do this? Simple.

Oakland will take a QB at #1 overall, and by getting the #9 pick they could also draft a WR to Olsen at TE as a target for Russell or even Brown to play LT for them. If Peterson is still there they would definitely take the trade(as would other teams), and we might be able to ask for even more picks.

How it benefits us is that we are able to get a player that will have a first round grade like Kalil at center, Blaylock at guard, Meachem, Bowe, Jarrett, Ginn, or Rice at WR, or a db that falls down the board at #33. At #40 we could take another player from the above list or draft a QB like Stanton or even a LT like Staley if he is still there. Also, by switching 4th rounders we would have overnight to evaluate the board and have the first pick at the BPA on day 2.

The final piece of the puzzle is that we would have a first round pick with a very good chance of it being in the top 5 if not top 2 overall for 2008 to go along with our own 1st rounder. This would allow us to either get Brohm as our franchise QB, or Long as our LT - possibly even McFadden at RB for either trade value or to have a major 1-2 punch at RB. It might not be fun this year to move down, but having patience and thinking ahead to the next season would make a lot of sense with (2) #'1's in a very strong draft in 2008.

i personally would love this... but a team like the raiders would never give up a future 1st rounder IMO, not even for a sure #9. Also lets face it 9 is a tough spot this year, it's not very desirable unless somebody like Quinn, or Peterson slides. I do think if we trade out of #9, it will probably be down.... like you've proposed.

I like the sound of anything that brings Brohm to our team.:) He's better than any qb in the draft this year, imo.
This isn't likely to happen but if it did, I would be jumping up and down.:jumper:

I would love for it to happen, but I just couldn't see Oakland making that trade. Oakland knows that they are probably gonna be in for another rough season and likely top five pick, so I doubt they would trade a first rounder likely to be so high. If they were to stay at 33, they would likely be able to land a first round receiving talent that slips. Guys like Sidney Rice and Zach Miller should be there for them if thats what they need to address.

yeah i wouldn't mind having brohm as our QB.

I agree it might be far fetched that they would do it but it is a possibility. If someone is there at #9 that would be a huge asset to Oakland like Peterson or Ginn they might do it. Teams don't think far enough in advance to help themselves, and what if they become enamored with a player so much this year that they give away their #1 next year? Either way we need to trade down this year and get another 2nd or 3rd/a 1st next year for the long term.

I just really wish Brohm would have came out in this years draft. We definitely could have landed either him or Quinn then.

Also, KendallCat. Well thought out post. I am not sure if Oakland would go for this, but I definitely like the idea of that. load up picks for Cam so that he and mueller can pick the players they want on this team.

I posted this exact scenerio yesterday in the VIP. My thinking was that if Oakland took Calvin Johnson at one, there is a decent chance that Russell will be available at 9. Oakland, I would imagine, would be very interested in trading with Miami for that pick. Under your scenerio, Miami is not getting enough value for the 9 pick.

I proposed Miami's #9 in 2007 for Oakland #33 (second round) and #65 (third round plus Oakland's #1 in 2008.

Miami's number 9 pick is worth 1350.

Oakland's number 2 pick (33) is worth 580. That leaves 770 points for Miami to get to even. Oaklands third round pick (65) is worth 265. That leaves about 500. A next year pick is usually valued at one round lower than if were in the current draft. That is a first round next year is worth about a second round pick this year. 500 points in on the high part of the 2nd round, so including Oakland's 2008 #1 would make for a fair trade.

I like the idea of gathering picks. The only thing that concerns me is that a lot of people just assume we will be able to land a Brohm or Brennan next year. What happens if we or Oakland happens to scratch together 5 or 6 wins this year. Then we would be in the exact same position next year with little opportunity to pick up one of the top QB's which will land in the top 5. We will be waiting yet another year to start grooming our franchise guy. Crappy teams tend to have QB needs we shouldn't go into these trades thinking our franchise QB will be there for the taking next year.

Can we make this trade now?

Mannn we would have 3 2nd rounders and 2 3rd rounders, plus a definite top 10 pick next year IMO, plus our original first for next year. We could address needs this year and next year get Brohm and possibly one of the big name LT's (Long, Baker, Gaither). It would give us another year to evaluate Lemon and Pep (I'm pretty sure we bring in another veteran) . . . and then we could be set after hte 2008 draft.
