Now that merling is on the trading block and it is said that we are shopping for a 2nd TE, I wouldn't doubt it if we made a trade for martellus bennett, he was on the trading block last year and the cowboys are high on their 3rd string TE phillips, the cowboys also run a 3-4 and merling would give them some depth in their system, we also have a history of making trades with the cowboys and obviously sparano and ireland come from dallas. From what I have been hearing clay has not really impressed so far in camp and I think he was supposed to be that seem threat TE we were looking for. Bennett hasn't really lived up to the hype but he has good size and athleticism and would be a good compliment to fasano and I think he would be able to split the seems and beat LBers, personally I would like to trade for carlson from seattle but we will see what happens. But this is complete speculation and I'm just going on our history with dallas and it kind of makes sense, I think bennett would be a better seem threat TE then of the other guys behind fasano, epps, masturd, and whoever else.

He was a 2nd round pick in 2008, so it is pretty safe to assume his contract is close to Merling's deal.

Bennet for Merling? Hell Yeah! i know hes not a GREAT player but definately has alot more potential than any of our TEs, Mastrud? Epps? over Bennet? please. Not to mention or D-Line is stacked and Merling will probably end up getting cut anyways if we dont trade him

You'll be hardpressed to find anybody who values Merling at a 5th round level at this stage.

Seems like a pretty fair straight up trade if you ask me.
