Ichiro

all he does it hit singles. Far from one of the better players in the game.

Maybe he just hits singles, but amazing fielder, has a better arm than Guerrero, may not hit home runs like crazy but plays the game its meant to be played. That is by Hustling and playing hard, doing what he can to win and this by hitting and gettin on base (just if the mariners could bring him in) He has great speed and is one of the better base stealers and again... a GREAT professional player

he's far from great and he's not someone who will take a team and lead them anywhere. Sure, its nice to hit .300 and get a bunch of hits. And he is a good fiedler, but there are a ton of guys like that in this league. And with the inflation of HR's, this guy can't pop out any on a regular basis. Even if you say screw the HR's, he's not a HR hitter.......at least drive someone in and get some RBI's. Do something. Hitting a bunch of singles is nice, but its just that nice. Nothing great by any means.

If most were told they could start a team and pick any 10 players in the league they want to start their team, Ichiro isn't being taken. If you said pick 20, he still wouldn't be taken.

Ichiro is a great player. He's got amazing instincts and has this palpable feel for the game that you don't see from other players. His accomplishments in Japan will always be overlooked, but there is a bottom line here. He is a singles hitter, possibly the best ever. Unfortunately, that limits how great he can be.

Kaz Matsui was/is considered a great player in Japan baseball. So what Ichiro did over there is meaningles in the eyes of most. Obviously any scrub (kaz is an example) can be considered GREAT in Japan.

Kaz Matsui wasn't ready for the New York spotlight. Ichiro was smart, settling into a city with a huge Asian population and a not-too-demanding public/press.

Kaz Matsui isn't ready for MLB. NY, Oakland, Seattle, Texas, FLA, Philly......no matter WHERE he plays he will suck.

David Schoenfield has an interesting take on the Hall of Fame and Ichiro's chances for induction. http://sports.espn.go.com/espn/page2/story?page=schoenfield/050729&num=0

He's got a point. Can't you see all the old-timers who neither know nor care anything for sabermetrics getting behind the guy? He's not *THAT* different from Wade Boggs, offensively. Both guys have/had a .443 slugging percentage for their careers, though Boggs has about a 30 point edge in on-base percentage.

I dont see Ichiro making the Hall.....for one thing he started his career a little late after being in Japan. I saw Ichiro play at Safeco and he gives it his all but he is rather one dimensional....he hits and get on first, and he is a decent fielder with a above average arm, but I dont think he has ever been the most dominant guy at his position. By the way, pass on the Ichiro sushi dog at Safeco.

Ichiro is a great player. He puts up numbers consistantly. What more do you want? HRs? He isn't a HR hitter. RBIs? He is usually at the top of the order, so he has less chances of bringing in runs.

Boggs is in the HOF with the highest batting average of ALL third basemen in the hall. Ichiro isn't on that level.
