So, I was thinking to myself if I had the luxory of predicting that Chad Pennington has several years of good football left in him, which i truly believe he does, how long would you like to see him starting over Henne?

Steve Mcnair had 2.

Aaron Rogers had 3.

Matt Cassal had 4.

In a truly ideal situation, i wouldnt mind having Henne become a pro behind the scenes til his 4th season. Thats right, let him learn as much as he can and limit his growing pains when it matters for us. And by the time that Penny is on his way out, or gets injured or what not, Henne will have a much improved team to inherit and it would only help him grow better.

Anyway make sure to vote and post your thoughts. Thanks.

I am in no hurry to replace ChadP

if we build a great defense in the next 2 off-seasons then ChadP could take us to the SB in '10

Yeah, I hope that a little of the leadership and tape-savvy that Penny has will rub off on Henne. He may not be the guy I expected to be our QB of the future, but at least there should be some kind of continuity in the coming years.

Wow, 14 votes and i'm shocked that no one has called for Henne to start immediatley.

I think chad should get next year as well,as long as we stay in the hunt.

I would vote too but I'm missing the option "He should start as soon as he gives us the best chance of winning among all QBs on our roster".

i think henne would be ready in 3-4 years. in the meantime, let him learn and take in as much as he can from the most accurate QB in the NFL

i, myself voted 3 years but it could be more or less depends on how Penny does during that time. if he's still giving us the best chance to win then i say we keep Penny in there as long as possible, if henne starts to show that he's mastered the same thing Penny has then maybe it's time for him to start. anyways the coaches and the front office finally know what their doing so i'll leave it in the their hands, what ever they decide i'll be for it.

Since there's no way to know what's best for any young QB I'd rather him play sooner then later. I know Pennington is doing real well for us so it makes the decision to wait on him alittle easier but I think we're wasting time on his developement. Young QB's that get it can play right away (M.Ryan is proving this once again) and I don't and never will buy into the theory of playing someone too early ala (Beck). Henne gave us a glimpse of what's to be expected against Arizona, there's no reason he can't play now and learn on the job.
I expect him to compete in training camp and possibly start next year unless Pennington leads us to the playoffs and we win a round in which really leaves us no choice.

If he's not ready to start by the beginning of his 3rd year, I don't know if he'll ever be ready. After all, he was a 4-year starter at Michigan. As for your examples, McNair played at Division II Alcorn State in the shotgun 100% of the time. Plus, he wasn't exactly the sharpest knfe in the drawer coming out of college (ever hear one of his early interviews? I've heard 1st graders sound much, much more astute); Rodgers was probably ready sooner, but had an idiot in front of him that wanter to retire one minute and keep playing the next; and Cassell hadn't played any meaningful time behind center since high school (had Palmer and then Leinart in front of him at USC).

If we are out of the playoff hunt at the end of this season, Henne should get significant playing time in the last one or 2 games of the season. Ideally, it would be towards the end of blowouts (us winning). It puts him in a position of success. If we go are losing by a big margin and play him, he may try to force things too much to make things happen. This could lead to interceptions, poor play, etc and shake his confidence.

That said, I would not mind Chad Pennington starting again next season.

Yeah, but WVDolphin hasn't voted yet.......

3 years.
WV loves Pennington...
And like Spiff said, Henne needs to start as soon as he is the best QB on the team. If thats this Sunday or 4 years from now, so be it.

Every great player forgets his last play whether it was a pick or a TD, they don't lose confidence because they believe in how great they are. Any player that losses confidence in themselves would never achieve greatness in their careers. Sitting on the bench does not create this or destroy it either, Beck will never be an above average QB because he doesn't have the ego for it. I guarentee you Chad Henne is not happy riding the pines and believes that he could lead us into the playoffs right now. He may say something more politically correct but once he gets his shot there will be no looking back.
