Do You Guys Remember March 15 2006 When We Made The Two Worst Moves In The History Of Football Or Moves. Instead Of Signing A Good Proven Qb That Could Have Picked Up Where Marino Left Off In Drew Brees. Whom Was A Free Agent And We Could Have Just Signed Him But Instead We Pick Up A Sorry *** Piece Of Trash That Minny Didnt Even Want. And To Beat It All We Gave Up A 2nd Round Pick For Him. So Lets Put It Simple.
Drew Brees= Free Agent + 6yr 60 Mil Contract
Daunte Culpepper = 2nd Round Pick +6 Mil A Year

Culpepper Hurts Knee Again And Sits In Favor Ofjoey Harrington
Who Gets Benched For Harrington Maybe David Carr Or Tim Couch. Cmon I Mean Really If He Didnt Have Moss Hed Been Out Of Football A Long Time Ago. I Mean Moss Would Make Me Look All Pro.
Brees Turns Saints Team Around And You Know What Hes Bringin To The Table Every Week. Sit Back , Relax, Now Close Your Eyes And Start To Think Of Sitting At Your House On Sunday Morning Watching Nfl Live Or The Prgame Shows Waiting For The Game To Come On Knowing That Brees Is Your Qb. Which If That Was The Case It Would Have Meant That We Kept Chris Chambers And We Welker. So Think Of Brees Dropping Back And Tossing Td Passes To Welker And Chambers Along With Randy Mcmichael. And Ronnie Would Be Healthier Cause We Wouldnt Have To Run All The Time And Teams Couldntstack 8 In The Box And Beg Harrington And Culpeper To Beat Them. Then With Brees Scoring Points And Putting Us In Games . Jt And Zach Would Have Been More Motivated To Play And The Defense Would Have Been A Little More Fresh Having Time To Rest. Playoffs Every Year Would Have Been Nice. Oh Cher If I Could Turn Back Time.

Good gawd man, what's with the CAPS to begin each word?? It's like reading the longest movie title ever in the history of movies.

Also, you allude to the two worst moves ever. This was one move (picking up Culpepper). The failure to pick up Brees is not a move, it was a non-move. Just as Miami failed to pick up every other free agent QB sitting out there, therefore each failure to pick up a QB is not a move in and of itself.

I hope this cleared things up.

Now, back to 2008 and the show already in progress....

I really don't care to dwell on the Culpepper over Brees decision. I think it was a fine move. At the time, it wasn't as clear cut as people are now trying to make it out to be. There were plenty of people, I'm tempted to say the majority on this board were good with the signing. Brees was coming off of a rotator cuff injury I think and the logic at the time was a QB with a leg injury or a QB with an arm injury? I'll admit, I thought Culpepper was going to be awesome here, and of course I was wrong, but really where would we be if we had a QB that worked out at the time?

Ever since Marino retired and missing the playoffs year after year QB wasn't our only problem, or really any specific position wasn't the real problem. At the time maybe just a QB would've worked because the rest of the roster was solid. But with year after year of crappy drafting, we've been reduced to what we had last year. At least last year forced the organization to go through an overhaul and bring in people who know how to build and sustain contending teams. If Brees came here and did better that Culpepper, it would've just delayed the inevitable of replacing our front office and coaches. I'd much rather be in the rebuilding situation we're in now than have a team with Brees that'll probably win 7-10 games but still have the same numbskulls making the decisions. Now we have Parcells who's never been a VP yet, but brings tons of experience, success, and knowledge to the table, Ireland who I believe has proved his mettle this offseason, and Sporano, we'll see how he does, but I feel much better about him than I ever did about Cam.

I think you are implying that Saban could have been a good coach.

I believed in Saban until he officially left the team, but as you look back, you realize it wouldn't have worked. He was enough of a hardass to keep us in the mid-range of records, but never more. Brees would have made us an 8-8 or 9-7 team, and Saban would still be here.

Now we have Parcells. It sucks that we have sat through twelve years of incompetence, but it will pay off now.

Why dont you just be happy with what we have right now? Sure were not so sure how things will turn out but we have real people running this team and dont have to worry about the bone head spielman, saban or cam drafts anymore. We have a franchise quarterback grooming right now, We have a talented and young oline, our dline is stacked with talent. Sure brees would've helped us for a couple of years but i have a good feeling after a couple of good drafts we'll have a playoff team for years and years.

I was hesitant about Saban until I read his book & think he could have been above average had he had enough patience w/ himself to implement his process.

This whole debacle regarding coaching & personnel began after Jimmy resigned and begged Wayne to hire "he who I shall not mention"

I'm sorry but I'm going to have to disagree with you there... completely.

I had some issues with my knee and my shoulder around that time and I remember asking the physical therapist about the nature of them both. Turned out that there was nothing wrong with my knee - I'd just hyperextended it a little and it was sore. My shoulder, on the other hand, had the equivalent of "tennis elbow" - that is, basically, swelling around the tendons and ligaments.

The physical therapist was also a football fan and I asked him about the Culpepper vs. Brees thing... and guess what his professional opinion was... Brees... NO FREAK'N hesitation about it. He was from the midwest originally, so he followed the Vikings a little and he said that the knee injury Culpepper had was "catastrophic" and then he described to me how that surgery goes... look it up some time... it's ridiculous... they practically staple gun your knee back together for what it's worth... one bad turn after coming back from that type of injury and it's blown again. Bottom line: damaged goods... and we gave up a second for this clown.

Also, as he had followed the Vikings, he couldn't help to mention that Culpepper, as we all found out the hard way... is not the brightest... and Brees, on the other hand... well, man is damn smart... you want to succeed in this leauge as a QB... you better be smart... bottom line. Culpepper, according to NUMEROUS sources, was/is is complete dumbbutt that owed a lot of his success to playing indoors, with Randy Moss and Anthony Carter and always behind a good offensive line with a decent running game.

Oh, by the way, the logic about the shoulder injury on a QB being of more concern... falacy... total falacy... the type of injury that Brees had has a 95% success rate for complete healing... the bottom line was that Brees wanted to see the money and didn't want to be screwed with and he KNEW that he had other options beside Miami... also, rumour has it that what little interaction he had with Saban was enough to turn him off to the SOB... so for Brees, it was like "No big loss, man." For us... well, we all know what happened with DumbButt at QB... useless.

And one other thing... Saban and the organization were some cheap, short-sided suns of beatches over the money issue with Brees. And, in the end, we signed Culpepper to a contract worth just 2.2 million (or something like that) more than what Brees was looking for. 2.2 milliom... in the NFL world... that's like the difference between giving one of your employees a $2000 raise, for you and me in the "regular world". All I have to say is that it was pathetic.

All in all, I totally agree with the original poster... NOT getting Drew Brees (for the 2nd time, no less) is the BIGGEST mistake this team has made in the last five years.

Personally, I would have loved for Zach and JT and Chambers and McMichael and others to have had the chance to go deep in the playoff and, who knows, maybe go to The Dance... and they could have... save for Saban being who and what he is... an a$$hole... probably one of the most unprofessional SOB's to ever hold the title of Head Coach in the NFL... right up there with his a$$clown, cheating friend in NE.

Go back a couple more years to Apr 21st, 2001 and just draft Brees out of the gate. We could have had him way back when, but instead took Jamar Fletcher just a few picks before Brees was taken at the top of the 2nd round.

We offered Brees the same contract he signed with NO. He CHOSE to sign with them. The whole arm thing is BS, Saban just wanted to save face.

Hey, OR we could go back and draft Tom Brady in the 5th round ... while we're at it, let's go back and bash Wanny in the head with a shovel until he stops squirming so that he never lives long enough to screw up our entire franchise.

:rolleyes2: ... great thread ... :rolleyes2:

One star.

If we drafted Brees right out of college then we would have given up on him before he became good and he would be with a different team right now.

Also, how do we know Brees would have been successful here? With rare exceptions, most quarterbacks are products of a system. Hell, most players are products of a system. That is why Culpepper was a beast in Minnesota but has tanked everywhere else. That is why Joey Porter is a shell of what he once was.

Since we are playing the "what if" game. It was my opinion back then and still is today that at that time instead of giving up a pick for Culpepper and another for Harrington. We should of used a pick to trade up in the draft to get Cutler and we should of signed Steve Hutchingson in FA, and resigned Gus. No Culpepper, no joey, no Drew. We would of been in much better shape now if we had gone that direction IMO.

But that is the past and in the end I think we are better off now then if Saban had stayed. Weather or not he was a good coach or not, the guy was a monster. Good Riddens as far as I'm concerned.
