One QB on our roster that isn't being discussed much is Josh McCown. To be completely honest, I don't know much about the guy. I've seen his stats posted on this web site but the numbers can be deceiving sometime. I was just wondering what everyone's take on this guy is. Do you think he has any upside? Do you expect him to start in 2008. Basically let me know if you think he will win the job and what you expect out of him if he is indeed named the starter. Thanks!

dude i would not be happy to any stretch of the imagination but to his credit he did play for the Cardinals, Lions, and Raiders where careers go to die (and i'm not just talking about the Raiders).

He's better than Cleo Lemon. I mean, he has heart and intensity, a tough guy. He's got a strong enough arm, but I don't see Josh McCown being anything more than what he already is. A decent backup quarterback that can start some games when called upon.

I wouldn't be too upset with McCown as the starter. I will be upset though that it means that Beck still hasn't developed into a starter. I don't believe McCown is a long term answer, but he is a safety net for the new regime to get their starting QB. Whether that is Beck or a QB from this draft(Possibly Henne or Flacco) remains to be seen.

I wouldn't be too upset either....sad that Beck didn't show he could beat him out...but we've had so many QB's lately that I am not phased by anything anymore...it's like I am numb to the QB carousel here.

He has good leadership qualities, plays hard & with a lot of emotion kind of like Garcia style. I think coaches, teammates ,and fans will respect his efforts. He is also tall and has a good arm. I think good coaching plus these attributes will help him elevate his game to the next level and bring us some success as our starter.

I totally agree with you! I'm sorry but Cleo Lemon was bloody awful!! His foot work and happy feet and erratic throws were pathetic not to mention the guys he got laid out..... and I am so glad he's in Jacksonville! I think McCown is a huge upgrade over Lemon

I'd rather see John Beck be named the starter he needs more playing time. He had a really bad Offensive Line last year and now we have a little better one, I guess..:err: But he needs to be our starter next year! No Matt Ryan we need Howie Long.. I mean Chris Long..

no disrespect intended Bliss but I really just want to know more about McCown. One small comment like that will spark another Ryan, Beck debate. This thread is hypothetical, hopefully we start the right guy.

if he starts ... then the giants move up to my new favorite team(per the best superbowl upset EVER!!!!!):woot:

Having followed McCown fairly closely during his time in Arizona and Oakland (not so much in Detroit), I can sum him up in two words:

1. Eeeeeee
2. Ratic

Oh, and add injury prone.

So I guess that's 4 words.

In other words, he's pretty much Jay Fiedler but has a stronger arm. I know that there are cases of quarterbacks being late bloomers. For example: Rich Gannon, Trent Green, and Jeff Garcia. I just don't see that with Josh. I don't have anything against the guy, but he's just way too erratic with his throws. The Dolphins have had too many inaccurate quarterbacks in the past. Beck is known for his accuracy.

I watched McCown play against the Broncos and I thought he played really well. He has pretty good mobility in that if you fall asleep on him, he will often run ten+ yards.....but he does at times hold onto it a little long when in the pocket. I think he has an above average arm and he plays with injuries. I think his thumb or hand was injured in the Broncos game and he still played well. The Raider's OL, and Gallery at LT, didn't give him much time to throw it so I think you cannot fault him for many sacks. I would give him an edge over Beck to start this year.

McCown can basically be summed up in 6 words

exceptional when on, terrible when off.
