comes out and wins the National Championship next year, does everyone on this board say that the new coach won with his players like they did to Coker saying he won with Butch's guys? I'm just curious if it's going to work both ways!

Coker wasnt going to win another national championship in his lifetime, the man couldnt coach his players up at all.

Whoever we hire will in fact win with Cokers recruits, but with his own coaching. Coker walked into a situation with a bunch of NFL ready players already there, that wont be the case this time.

Just so I"m clear, you must be saying that Coker was a good coach and the teams problems lay somewhere else.

So let's hear your theory.
What was the problem that caused a steady decline in the Miami program since Coker took over?

Hell Miami has the talent. But do they have the discpline*sp and coaching staff to get there?

some of the prized recruits over the last couple of years haven't worked out? (namely Willie Williams)

We've always had the talent, hell, if you compare recruiting classes Coker's consistently dominated the ones that Butch brought in. The problem is that Coker had no idea how to coach them up ar utilize them.

You see guys like Frank Gore, who was an oft-injured, average player at the U, go onto the pros and into a different system under different coaches and all of a sudden he's a top 5 back in the league. WTF? All of UM's players have peaked early over the last several years, and that's because they are good talents but once opposing coaches get tape on them and make gameplan for them, our coaches had no effing idea what to do to counterattack. The sole exception to this being the Defense, where Shannon has done a good job.

So no, I would not be surprised in the least if a new coach comes in and only loses 2-3 games next season with "Coker's" players.

i keep hearing he was a good OC, not great, and really only got the job cause Butch left in the middle of the night and UM was left on a ledge, the players talked the Dean into going with Coker to keep the same game plans in place and they won for 2 years. After that it was on Coker to recruit and coach, he did ok at recruiting (anyone could recruit at UM, it is UM for god's sake) but he couldnt improve his players once he got them.

by the way, i dont see UM having much of a chance to win it all next year. That program has a lot of problems on the offensive side of the ball (lets face it UM still plays d). The QB position either needs Wright to be coached up or recruit a player and coach him up, the line really needs some work and some new recruits, RB are there again i think they need focus and direction, and the WR needs are basically give them a QB. lol. Um will be back if they hire well, which they will, but it wont be next year. Look for them back in the picture in 2, and winning the ACC in 3.

coker was really only hired to be the guy to win the championship in 2001. i don't think he was ever looked at as a long-term kinda guy. and it showed.

Why do you say that? I thought Butch Davis credited him with most of the recruiting success during Davis' tenure. That sounds like someone you would want to keep around IMO.

It's funny, but I don't see where people say that Coker "can't recruit", that is a myth. I think one of his strong points was his recruiting, he just isn't a good coach. Hell Coker has consistently brought in a good class of players . . . and I hear that this class he has comming in next year is his best one yet (I'm guessing Miami might want to hurry up with getting a coach before these top recruits change their mind). Coker had to go, he is not a bad guy . . . but not the guy to run this program . . . and when he let those coaches go last year, we needed to see difference, and it got worse. Mike Shula got fired for not letting go his coaches, you respect a man for that . . . Coker threw his guys under the bus.

Ahhh ... the arrogance of "The U"

How many programs have fans that actually expect to win a national championship one year after barely becoming bowl eligible?

(Other than Timmy) - No one else sees this as odd?

 No wonder it's considered to be an undesirable job in many circles.

First off, I don't see any Cane fans thinking the Canes will compete for the title next year. The original post was a knock against people happy that Coker is gone.

Second, what "circles" mentioning UM as an undesireable job are you talking about? My guess is your circle of WV fans would be just about the only ones.

Anybody thinks that UM can win a national title next year is out of their mind. Whoever comes in as the next coach . . they need to work with Kyle Wright every day, because this kid is messed up. Then, getting OUR backyard back is a priority, its all about seeing positive changes . . . but no question we Cane fans are always gonna hope for the best and every September we wanna "run the table" . . thats just how it is.
