and that Saban is trying to infuse this roster with youth for the future, why are we even starting Frerotte? He has no future with this team! We should start Sage if this year is a rebuilding year!

because its not totally a rebuidling year. Honestly, we're starting frerrotte so we can blame him for everything that may go wrong and at the end we'll cut him and feel and draft someone. (and also i believe we'll get someone this year, like mauck or couch)

I believe this is the 4th time you have made this known- and now you make its own thread?

Bravo.

P.S. I dont agree. Our starters have not changed. This is our DEPTH and BACKUPS getting younger, which is never a bad thing. You act like these guys are studs- we were 4-12 last year.. so change of any kind is good.

That is why I wanted Feeley to start (and still do)

First of all, this is the first time I talk about it in light of the recent 4 acquisitions. Thank you for noticing that I feel Sage should start if it means we are in a rebuilding mode.

The truth is that this undrafted free agent Jackson has a good chance of being on the field in the dime package. I'm aware of Edwards, Richard, and Shaw not setting the world on fire but I would take them over these guys since they have NFL experience! Edwards was to our secondary what Frerotte is to our QB position so if you get rid of Edwards because he doesn't fit into our long term plans and you want to give a young man a chance to play, why not do the same w/ Sage?

but mario edwards, as we all should know thanks to chris chambers on thanksgiving in 2003, is horrible.

we could actually maybe win with frerrotte. thats all.

I'm not trying to be a smarta@@ but I don't think you can be half rebuilding and half not. I just can't interpret cutting guys w/ NFL experience (at positions that we are very thin at) for guys with no NFL experience who went undrafted and have been cut by another team in any other way as Saban rebuilding our team.

He's got NFL experience and at least was good enough to get on the field. We're getting another team's trash. An undrafted rookie free agent. Randall Gay made the team and contributed but he at least was signed by the Pats and showed that maybe he was worth keeping in PS with the Pats. We haven't seen anything from this Jackson kid but the fact that he was cut leads me to believe that he wasn't all that special. If he was, they would have found a way to keep him.

1) The season is 6 days away. We will add a corner with experience. Be patient. And when/if we do, our corners all of a sudden look OK. My number 1 choice at this point would be former 1st round pick Willie Middlebrooks- making our CBs: Madison/Howard/Daniels/Middlebrooks/Jackson. Nice young depth for the 3-4-5 and some speed to make up for the lackthereof in Sam and Reggie. And dont forget Poole was NOT put on IR- they expect him back this season, clearly.

2) Edwards has been brutal. I always assumed he would be kept on, just because we had nobody else and he would be a stopgap (like Frerotte, like you mentioned) However, Nick obviously is not going to BS anybody and he will cut you if you are not performing. He will find someone who will at least work hard. Richard was hardly noticeable on the field, and Shaw, while effective, was a backup at best. McGill, based on Jets fans reactions and the interest from 7 other teams, has talent. And like I said earlier, you have no idea what you are getting in Jackson- you may be pleasantly surprised. The personnel staff didnt just pick his name out of a hat, they must have done their homework and believe he can contribute. You want NFL experience? It doesnt always lead to more wins- EXAMPLE: OUR TEAM LAST YEAR! Tons of experience, but very few wins. We must take risks on young guys who may not have the experience but who may just have the skills and ability. They just need a chance, and NS is giving it to them.

If you want a counter argument to your thread title, well you answered your own question. Gus is starting, whether he is 34 or not, because he will give us the... drumroll please for the cliché... best chance to WIN. Sage had a nice little preseason, and I am happy he finally moved up the depth chart, but you cannot tell me that if we fast forward to Sunday at 3 PM, it is halftime and we are down 14-0 with the offense showing nothing, that we will not be chanting GUS! GUS! GUS! GUS! Like the saying goes, the backup QB is always the most popular guy on a football team.

and what if Jackson turns into a solid player? hes not another teams trash. He was a player stuck in hard sitaution. Can you imagine the kind of talent the panthers have at CB? with the likes of chris gamble and reggie manning, im not surprised he didn't turn any heads. However, Saban saw something in him worth getting a closer look at. thats all that matters.

I hope we find someone experienced to be our Dime back. Like you stated in #1. If not, we didn't make a good move. Our team can't afford to lose depth at CB when we are not very deep or very good.

I agree with you, and believe we will, which is why I have calmed down since I first saw the list of moves. We will not carry only 4 corners. Nick loves his secondary too much to do that. Middlebrooks probably wasnt claimed because, like others have mentioned, we would inherit his contract. We would sign him to a much more cap-friendly deal, if we are in fact interested.

I know that you and I may not be in those NFL circles but were you excited to hear that we signed an undrafted rookie FA that had been cut? I'm going to take a chance here and say if he's our dime back this season (which is very likely at this point), we are going to get burned. I have nothing to back this up except the fact that he was undrafted, and that he's a rookie. A rookie working on his 2nd team. In today's NFL where the salary cap dictates a lot of what you do, I'm sure the Panthers would have kept the young man if he was as good as their 4th best CB since he could have replaced a more costly player.

Im just a little bias here. Quite frankly i never wanted Mario edwards on this team. the idea of signing someone we specifically attacked and made look like a pure fool in one game, just doesn't seem right. im welcoming the undrafted free agent with open arms over mario edwards.

Understandable. My only gripe is that if you're going to get rid of a guy who has NFL experience, make sure you have someone that is better than him to take his place (which I hope we do before the season starts as Dolphins1000 has predicted). Most NFL CB's are better than Edwards but I don't think I'm ready to put Jackson ahead of Edwards based on his pedigree. No disrespect to Jackson, I hope he proves me wrong but I just want to have a player that is experienced out there. We've waited a long time for this season to come and all I want is to know that we're going to be competitive and not look as pathetic as we did last year. Last year the problem was that our O was so bad that our awesome D had to score points for us to win. This year, our D has more chinks in the armor and the O looks sluggish.
