If we had drafted Mallet?

Mallett looked very good against the Jags. But I'm pretty sure that Patrino's offense is also Erhardt-Perkins based, which is the same base they use in New England. That's really helped him hit the ground running.

That's a good point. I think all of the offensive coaches from the Parcells-Belichek coaching tree run some variation of the Erhardt-Perkins system. Tom Coughlin is a disciple of the Parcells coaching tree, and Petrino was once an OC under him somewhere, I forget where...

Anyway, the formations and the routes are very similar and the verbage is similar. However, it's also a more complicated system for a young quarterback to pick than typical systems with numbered routes with all things being equal.

I like Ray Perkins now, but he did more bad for Alabama's program than he ever did good...

Yeah, I agree. It's always been somewhat ironic to me that from a verbiage standpoint the Coryell is probably the easiest to learn, but it's also the hardest system for a QB to play in.

For what it's worth, if we had drafted Mallett, Daboll also runs a Perkins based system, though apparently he's grafted a version of the Coryell route numbering system on it (partially to adapt to our offensive players, or so my understanding). So Mallett would probably have fit in just fine here, also. Talent wise, a smart, talented guy like Mallett is probably going to fit anywhere, though. That's what people with talent do, and talent has never been Ryan Mallett's problem.

Ryan Mallet was simply the most NFL ready QB in the draft. People who talk about that he can't move have never seen him play and the most important thing is that he can make throws that few other QBs can.

I saw a video clip that was supposed to show how bad he was in the pocket taken from 5 games. In this clip of him at his worse he still threw for a number of TDs.

The same draft site used the same game film to then show what a great arm he has.

Ryan Mallet is going to stick it to us year after year when he replaces Brady.

When he replaces Brady? In 6 to 8 years when Brady retires. There's a better chance of the pats screwing the Raiders over getting a couple of 1st rd picks. In the next 4 years than Mallet replacing Brady.

Are you talking about the Universal Draft videos that I compiled? I compiled video from 5 games, but none of the videos were ever designed to show Mallett "at his worst".

I agree, the Patriots took Mallett to polish him up and sell him off for a 1st round pick.

I am a first time poster but a long time fan of the site. I was curious why so many dolphin fans are quick to point out Mallets lack of mobility? Even though everyone seems to think you now have to be Michael Vick to play football in this league the truth is you only have to be elusive. Marino was not what one would call mobile but he moved well in the pocket to avoid the rush. Mallet is going to be an above average starting quarterback and anyone who thinks otherwise is simply fooling themselves. Mallet is going to sit behind one of the best QB's in history on a team with the best coach. If he doesn't do well I will be shocked. Just look at Matt Cassel. Cassel is much less talented than Mallet and in that system he thrived. So like it or not the Patriots QB situation looks set for years while ours is going on a decade plus of pure and utter chaos!

Great post. Welcome abord. You should post more often.

You dont happen to be a guy with a first initial D and last name Hunt that coached a Jr High School team until recently do you?

Not sure bro but one of the two videos was supposed to be showing that Mallet cannot play well under pressure. Perhaps you can show a link to both videos, I can't find them.

What difference does it make? I read the guy's first post and I'm already convinced he's more competent than Tony Sparano.

He might actually make a good candidate to replace Sparano after this season except he's probably over-qualified to coach the Miami Dolphins...

mallet is going to be playing QB for the pats behind the 2nd best qb in the league and the best coach in the league.

of course he's going to be getting better. truth is, we don't have a good coach to coach up that talent.

it's like the eagles keep getting mediocre QB's to play well in backup roles and in preseason, then they trade them to QB starved teams for high draft picks. then the fins get AJ feeley and he falls on his face becuase we don't have someone to coach him.

the same thing will happen with mallet. if we drafted him, he would be just as bad as henne becuase we would have the same clueless people coaching him.

I might be talking about the Video you made called Ryan Mallett "Under Pressure", on some Dolphin site this video was used as proof that Ryan Mallett crumbles under pressure.

I believe in what your article said about him. Every team he has ever played has tried to blitz him and it has not worked.

The Pats may end up cutting Mallet in the final cuts. If that is the case,we will have a shot at him if Ireland wants him.
Who would you keep, Devlin or Mallet?
Tough call.

i would take mallett in a second. devlin has a hold on to the ball too long prob. Mallett already is getting rid of it quick. This is after all the NE offense. thats what they do. quick hits and receiver makes the yards.

I just love all the Mallett talk though. Just wait til they put pressure on him. I taped the New England game to see mallett. Price got him alot of his yards on a nice out. Jax defense was lax IMO by the time Mallett came in. they were on the plane.

Mallett over threw some. He threaded a needle on another. The Price TD in back of endzone was not a TD though. he did not have complete control of that ball when his first step went out. but what the hell, its preseason.

Mallett will need lots of real experience vs. first teamers and blitzers. that was his weakness. they say that all you had to do was get some pressure on him and it threw his game off. Do I think he can become great? certainly. Lots of guys can. But it requires hard work year in year out and week in and week out. I just dont understand when is this guy ever going to play?????

If BB wants to get rid of one of his QB's, then hey, I will take Hoyer or Mallett cus if Hoyer is looking better, and we have a NE style offense, then it fits.

well, here is my thought on that. If Brady goes down with serious injury, then this is good (in a winning situation sense), then Mallett comes in and has to be the guy week in week out, thats when the fun begins. Its different when your the guy every week. Against our D, I would love the matchup, cus I know we would be blitzing him early and often. But besides, Hoyer is #2. Still just dont know when this guy will play. If mallett plays, Hoyer will be out of NE and this is a guy we might think about picking up. I think its a win win for us! LOL Ireland is allright!
