I think if we signed the two we would have a top 5 olines but the problem is can we still afford Brees?

I doubt seriously that we'll sign two high profile linemen. It's much more likely that we'll sign one high profile lineman, a second tier type and/or draft one.

Depends on who will be cut. Seau? Frerotte? Who else?

Plus you can get creative with signing bonuses and low salaries in 2006. That might bite you in 2007 or 2008 however...

Cutting those guys are only going to help us get UNDER the cap. (If there is one). Those cuts aren't going to be made to free up money to throw $6 mill a year at several linemen. We have alot of other areas of concern.

I know they supposedly have an interest in Shelton, but he may want more than he's shown he's worth.

so far, nobody on here has said a word about Brees. The question wasnt whther we could afford the linemen, it was whether we could still get Brees if we did get those linemen.

My answer is NO!

Unless we can sabotage a physical or workout that exploits his recovering arm and we can use it as leverage to get him for a pity penny.

But I doubt that will happen. There are too many teams in need of a Qb right now to force Brees' price down. And, if we want Bentley and Shelton, theres no way in hell we can afford Brees, you might as well say hello to a low round QB and a 99 cent value menu veteran (Frerotte or McNair).

What will happen:

We get Bentley, but it will cost us some heavy money.
We sign Brees to a 4 year $26 million contract with incentive bonuses and McNair style roster bonuses.
We draft a 1st round LT and 2nd or 3rd round G

Probably not, but I haven't looked at any numbers. And if it would, then I would take Brees over Shelton.

Another thing to think about...

do we even want Brees?

How many QBs have changed teams in the prime of their career and maintained the level of play the once had?

I'm only thinking of Trent Green, but he wasn't good in STL.

Maybe Bledsoe, but he isnt nearly as good as he was in NE.

Other than that? it doenst happen very often

but, who knows?
I guess this type of scenario doesnt happen very often either

I say we sign LeCharles Bentley cuz he is good in the running game, and then draft someone like Winston Justice. Any takers?

I would rather Bently and Brees. Those would be key additions. Then look to the draft to work on our D
