Continues to get sacked at crazy high numbers. Can we start to talk about him holding the ball too long? Or will there be another excuse? (disclaimer: I like Tanny)

he was sacked alot AFTER Albert went down cause of an injury...

He's not Russel Wilson . . . he just isn't.

If we take a guard at 14, and we still have the same protection issues, then hopefully the new coach can work with all this high end clay we have . . . because despite Tannehill not being as natural as others while in the pocket . . . the line is still the main culprit and you'd have to start looking at the scheme.

There is talent on this line tho.

Russell Wilson takes sacks at a higher rate than Ryan Tannehill. His offense just doesn't throw the ball very much, so the volume isn't there.

Russell Wilson is sacked on 8.7% of his pass dropbacks. Ryan Tannehill is sacked on 7.7% of his pass dropbacks.

not to mention tannehills time from taking the snap to throw is one of the quickest in the league.

29 Ryan Fitzpatrick BUF 281 2.57
30 Ryan Tannehill MIA 261 2.57

from 2013

QB time to throw:

1. Matthew Stafford 2.23
2. Ryan Tannehill 2.28
3. Peyton Manning 2.29
4. Andy Dalton 2.31
5. Philip Rivers 2.32
6. Aaron Rodgers 2.33
7. Carson Palmer 2.39
8. Jake Locker 2.45
9. Tom Brady 2.46
10. Matt Ryan 2.49

Hmmm seems Tannehill CAN manage a pocket when the guys in front of him can actually make one.

hard to sack a guy when he's ahead of the chains and can work off pa all the time...where is tannehill relative to wilson in sacks per attempt??? keeping in mind wilsons attempts are heavily off of pa which should be a boon to protection #s given defenders cant just pin their ears and rush

He is also under pressure at a higher rate than Ryan Tannehill, which probably explains why they don't throw as much. He's under pressure more than any other QB in the NFL.

The key difference here is his ability to improvise under pressure. It's night and day. One guy instinctively makes plays in the face of pressure the other guy needs to be directed more to move around.

I thought we were one of the top teams in the league in first down yards per attempt last year. I could be wrong but I thought I remember reading that.

Anyway, Wannysfanny made the point I was going to make, which is that Tannehill's sack rate isn't what people think it is. However, I do think it's high relative to his ypa. You can kind of look at the two stats in concert. It makes sense that if you're holding the ball for a long time it's because you're looking down the field, right? If you're getting sacked a lot and not pushing the ball downfield it signifies either, a) your protection is awful, or b) when your initial read isn't there you're having trouble getting to your secondary targets.

In any case, the ratio has to be a positive one, which is what net yards per attempt tracks. It counts sacks against your passing yards per attempt to give a fuller picture to what's going on every time you drop back.

Unsurprisingly, the top five in that stat includes a who's who of the top QBs in the game. Rodgers, Romo, Roethlisberger and P. Manning. And also Ryan Fitzpatrick.

Tannehill is 28th. Russell Wilson is 17th, fwiw.
