This isn't meant to be a whiny complaining thread, it's just more of a "what if" that I was thinking about.

As we all know, we had the choice of either Brees or Culpepper, and we chose Culpepper. We don't need to get back into that debate, just think about the chain of events that would have unfolded had we chosen Brees.

1.) It's safe to assume that we would have been a winning team that year ('06) and that Saban probably wouldn't have left.

2.) With Saban at the helm, we more than likely draft a SEC guy at pick 9 last year. With Brees, quarterback isn't a need, so Saban probably takes Patrick Willis (Ole Miss, SEC).

3.) Who knows how things would have worked out with Welker. If Brees and Welker are clicking, we likely don't let Welker even become a free agent, so he never gets the poison-pill offer from New England.

3-B) Imagine New England last year with no Welker. They would still have been great, but I don't think they would have been on quite the same level without Welker. I don't think they go 16-0 without Welker. Very debatable, I know.

4.) We definately don't trade Chambers last year, because our team would be extremely competitive and those two would probably have lit it up together.

So overall:

We would have been very competitive in '06 (wildcard maybe)

Probably still miss the playoffs last year (old defense, but with Patrick WIllis in the middle. Who knows about all the inujuries that hit us.)

We would have a lot less cap room with all those players, but QB, WR, and MLB would not be a need right now.

We probably wouldn't have Satelle without the Welker deal.

Who knows what free agents we could have attracted (Moss maybe?)

We definately would have put off rebuilding, but with Willis, Brees, Chambers, and Welker, we probably could've adressed our O-line and defense without ever entering rebuilding mode.

Obvioulsy no Parcells, Beck, Ginn, Cam Cameron and so on.

Anyway, it's crazy to think about how different things would have been if we'd just ponied up the dough to Brees. We would be in A LOT better shape, not just in the QB position, but probably in lots of other positions also. I know the shoulder injury was scary, but God what if the quarterback coin flip had gone the other way.

Please dont remind me about that. Nick saban was a horrible gm the only good thing he did was draft Ronnie.

your title said logic. your #1 basically said Brees would have been the same QB if he came here and we would be winning. Your logic is flawed and I will read no further. /end

Well, before we traded for Culpepper, Josh McCown was supposed to come in for a free agent visit. Would things had been any different if we signed Josh McCown then versus signing him now? We'll never know.

ahahahahahahaha if there were awards given for this site, you win in the WTF category to this point of the year lol

haha sorry i forgot about jason mybe if he starts at saftey and starts where he left off from last season then i wont lose my memory. but on the topic the dude is right we had one of the worst o lines that year and was average poor last year. you need a line for any position to be good.

Welker wasn't poison pilled.

Brees had better tools last season in NO and how'd THAT work out? No matter the conjecture, he does nothing for the aging D and little for the shaky OL. I like Brees a lot, wish we did have him from the start, but don't see where he would have been such a difference maker considering the crumbling infrastructure of the team. As far as little Nicky Satan's concerned, he's a mercenary who would have bolted any way, if not for Alabama, then eventually for someplace like Michigan who would have shown him the money. No great loss he's gone!

Saban would have been gone even with a successful Brees. Would be kinda cool thinking about our top 5 defense in 2006 along with Brees, Ronnie Brown, McMike, Chambers, Welker, and Marty Booker.

Problem is Mularkey was OC, not Linehan........so what could've been a great 12-4 would've been 10-6 probably and Brees would've just been "adequate" but nothing special.

We'd just be rebuilding next year, not this one.

Why is his logic so flawed. If we have Brees all that season then its quite possible that we have a winning record. We went 6-10 with poor qb play all season. New orleans was not exactly a power house when he went there.

Having Brees would've been cool, but Mularkey was still the biggest problem. With Brees and Linehan, who knows - bc we still had a top flight defense in 2006......

....shoulda, woulda, coulda
