Illegal batting in Dolphins-Patriots game comes under scrutiny

It is completely preposterous for an official to think he can clearly determine Vernon's intent...

It's a judgement call, much like on intentional grounding when a ref has to determine whether there was a receiver in the area, or if a receiver has control of a ball when he hits the ground, or whether a facemask was accidental or intentional, etc. Football and every other professional sport has numerous rules that require refs to make judgement calls. They're part of the game.

And for those that think "the fix is in," I have to ask why are you still watching? Further, how could the NFL keep a lid on a conspiracy of that size? Wouldn't some disgruntled former New England front office employee have blown the lid on it by now? You think all the other owners would quietly go along with it and that no former owners would have let the cat out of the bag?

That play happened so quick there's NO ****ING WAY that Vernon processed the thought in his head to smack the ball backwards to keep it away from the Pats, thats an instinctive play and every players instinct is to grab the ball not smack it down field.

Another rule created on spot to help the patriots, pathetic.

Exactly, why is this penalty never called? Its because it would have to be blatantly obvious for them to call it and players usually go for the recovery. Unless the Pats are struggling and you need to find something to put them back on track... That's what it is, and iirc, that flag came a bit late, doesn't that scream" ok guys, what are our options here? what can we call?" "oh I got it, remember this rule about not swatting the ball.... still exists?" "yeah good one there john, throw the flag"... Im obviously exaggerating but its so freaking unbelievable that its the way I see it...
