First off let me start off by saying i am with the group that feels we got robbed that game. This is not a knee jerk thread saying to fire Philbin or so and so sucks, just some things i feel need to be addressed and IMO would help this team. People are saying good teams overcome penalties and what not... But you cant overcome 3 penalties which should have led to punts which then in turn led to 17 points.
I think Tannehill put us in great position to win this game. We had a great drive and had Wallace wide open at the 5 yard line and he drops the ball... AGAIN!! Leads to a long missed field goal attempt . Could have been 3-7 which in turn ended up being 0.
Now back to my thread topic. I just dont understand what the coaching staff is doing. I feel like the biggest reason why Tannehill gets sacked so often is not only on him and the O line... But the fact that we are tipping off our plays before we even snap the ball. I hate to sound like a brooken record but this is the reason why we are last in the league and on pace to break the sack record. Defenses are reading our snap count. They know 1 go = pass and 2 gos= run. Its why we cant get the running game going really and its why we are getting sacked so much.
All the defense has to do is listen and read the count to know what the play is. One go... Rush hard... no matter what. 2 Goes.... Contain the outside and stop the run. People here say it shouldnt make much of a difference because it is a split difference... but that split difference is a huge deal. There is no need to reconize and read the play when the play is being given to you ahead of time. It allows the defense to rush hard on passing plays with 0 worries about the Run and vice versa. Whether this is Tannehill's own way of doing things or the way the coaching staff wants it done... IT IS WRONG!!! One of the coaches (Philbin) Needs to step up and acknowledge this issue and fix it now before we get our future qb murdered (Yes i said future QB... I am not down on him like a lot of the board is)
Now another thing i dont understand... Why arnt any of our rookies playing? Why does Dion Jordan barely get any action? Why do we continuesly see Nolan Carrol and Wilson out there instead of giving Taylor or Will Davis a shot? Davis was a huge surprise in camp and preseason and seemed to have impressed everybody in camp. Why dont we see him more? Taylor has played decent in the few times he was put out there... why cant we play him more? We spent high draft picks on all 3 of these players but none of them are getting any burn. People want to blame Ireland for this, but what about Philbin? Philbin needs to play these guys. We are not contending for a superbowl this year and we all knew this. Even at 3-0 we knew that we are a team that was still building and at least another 1-2 years from being at our potential. We need to develop our young guys.
This may sound like a joke, and yes my Username is a joke... But how come we dont see more Egnew? I have been watching him close when hes been on the field and he is blocking VERY VERY well and he has made 2 catches so far. I know 2 is not a lot, but he cant catch more without the oppurtunity. Another high draft pick going to waste if we dont give the Kid a chance. He is a great athlete and he is very big. His biggest problem was his blocking and so far he looks to have improved a ton in that department. Ive also heard the commentators constantly praise him for his blocking as well. Give the kid a shot. Run a 2 TE set every once in a while and try to get some passes completed across the middle. This will keep teams from blitzing us so hard. If we have 2 threats over the middle, tannehill will have a target to throw to when they send 1-3 linebackers at us. It makes too much sense to not do it.
So in conclusion..
1. Change the snap count. We are making the defenses job much easier. Is it a coincidence that after the first 3 games we are scoring much less? Teams have caught on.
2. Play the rookies over underperforming players and Dion Jordan just in general. Players wont get better without the reps, and cant be worse then some of the players ahead of them.
3. Give Egnew (or even sims) more snaps to play opposite Clay and give this team more over the middle options to counter act the blitz.
