I just watched nfl films the miami dolphins 1972 season. I had it tivo'd. the dolphins played at pittsburgh for the afc championship. i dont understand why we had to go on the road when we went undefeated in the regular season. we should have been #1 seed. did they have a different playoff seeding format in the early 70s. i could probably do a little research and find out but i figured the response here would be quicker. thanks

are you sure? The Orange Bowl had fake grass back then...could that be your solution?

With the introduction of the wild card, a rule was made that two teams from the same division (champion and wild card) could not meet in the first round (Divisional Playoffs). This rule would stay in effect through the 1989 season. More significantly, the home teams in the playoffs were still decided based on a yearly divisional rotation, not on regular season records (excluding the wild card teams, who would always play on the road). This lack of "home-field advantage" was most evident in the 1972 playoffs, when the undefeated Miami Dolphins played the AFC Championship Game against the Pittsburgh Steelers at Three Rivers Stadium in Pittsburgh. The Steelers had three losses during the 1972 regular season.

And thus ends this thread. Good information. I had always wondered about that myself, but was never motivated strongly enough to find out.

wow..so no matter what, those 72 fins DID have their work cut out for them. People say they played the easiest schedule and everything...bla, bla, bla..But to this day, no one's been able to do it. ANd going ON THE ROAD TO PITT and winnng in the Championship game is as Manly as it gets.

Hey, how about we re-enact the event during our season opener.
Hmmm...you think our punter can take off on a 37 yard run? :dolphins:

thanks, mystery solved. they really had their duntz.. i mean thinking caps on when they made that system.

And few people acknowledge that at the end of the regular season that year Miami had the #1 ranked offense and the #1 ranked defense in the league. I don't think any team has ever done that before.

If not, Welker can punt, can't he? (He does everything else)

also 2 1,000 yard rushers

Took a lot of balls for Shula to pull Earl Morrall in favor of Bob Griese (who hadn`t played since Week 5 due to a broken ankle) that game. Worked out well though, and the rest is history.
