I know you have your 53 man roster plus an 8 man practive, but I didnt know you can only dress 45, so whats the point of having a practive rosteR? or wahts the point of being on the roster when u still can sit out a game and not be activated, I thought not being activated meens u r on the practice squad but I guess thats just not it,

If you are on the 53 man roster, you are sole property of that team. Yes, you might not get activated for Game Day some weeks, but the team does not have to worry about losing you. If an injury happens, they can move a guy on the roster to the 45 man game day roster.

Having the 8 players on the PS gives the team a total of 61 players for practice during the week and again, if an injury happens, the team can move that player to the main roster from the PS.

The bad thing about the PS though is that if another team has a hole they want to fill, they can steal a player from your PS. For example, Anthony Armstrong is on the Dolphins PS. Lets say the Jets have an injury in practice tomorrow at WR and they like Armstrong, they can sign him to their 53 man roster and the Dolphins get nothing in return. It is a risk.

The 8 that sit are on the active roster, yes. But those 8 aren't always inactive. Depending on the opponent, a coach may activate another linebacker or receiver. It depends on the opponent. Also, more of the bottom 53 get to play when starters sit out because of injury.

The practice squad is for having players available to step in in case someone goes to injured reserve. It also allows more plays to be run in practice.

If I'm correct, the 8 players that are "in-active" on gameday, but that are on the 53 man squad, can become active if a player gets hurt; if nobody gets hurt, then they can't play. For example- Beck is "in-active" to start the game; Pennington goes down, and now it's just him and Henne, you can activate him, and make Penny inactive to return, so that yo have 2 "active" QBs. Make sense? But players on the PS cannot play on gameday while on the PS no matter what...

I'm not 100% sure, however, I think that is how it works...if it confuses you, let me know I'll try and explain it better.

Well said Nub. But, if I'm not mistaken, the Dolphins would get the first chance to sign him to their own 53. Thus, they essentially could prevent the Jets from doing so, but they would have to cut a member of the current 53.

I'm not sure the reasoning behind only dressing 45 of the 53 man roster. It's not financial since the deactivated players still get the same pay.

You can find a breakdown of the practice squad rules here

Basically the practice squad players get to practice with the 53 man roster and often act as the scout team for the next opponent.

Any team can sign a player from another teams PS at any point in the season but they MUST add them to their 53 man roster for a minimum of 3 weeks. This will happen on occasion when injuries deplete a particular team and they'll sign someone off their own or another teams practice squad.

I will tell you the point of being on the 53 man roster even if you arent active for the game during that week.......its called a big fat paycheck.

One thing I have wondered: do the practice squad players have a choice? Or do they have to go to a team that claims them?

The reason that only 45 are active is to allow for injuries. It is not deemed fair to have team A with 47 healthy available players on gameday and team B possibly having all 53 healthy. 45 is the number agreed on by the owners. Also, players that have more than 4 years in the league or have played in more than 10 games are not allowed to be on a practice squad.
I believe the above is correct, but if anyone finds otherwise please say so.
