Pats fan since 1995
Hey Phins fans. I'm a Pats fan, but don't worry, I'm not here to act like a troll, an assclown or talk smack. (And besides, I root for the Dolphins twice a year - when they play the Jets! )
Just thought I'd branch out a little bit. Most of the other fans on my "home board" (PatriotsPlanet) are members on other teams' sites just to talk football with fans of those teams, so I'm trying it out myself.
I became a Pats fan in 1995, when I was in college at the University of Wisconsin. I've always lived here in the Badger State, and grew up a Packers fan. When I started college, however, I decided it would be neat to have a "second favorite" team to root for that no one else did. I picked the Patriots, who promptly did a tailspin and had a 6-10 season the first year I followed them.
Then, to my horror in 1997, the Pats wound up playing against the Packers in the Super Bowl. I rooted for the Packers to win but I hoped the Pats would at least put up a good game and not get demolished like in Super Bowl XX. Over the next couple years I realized I liked the Patriots more than I liked the Packers, even as the team got worse and worse under Pete Carroll.
If you had told me in those years that before I hit 30 the Patriots would win three Super Bowls in four years, I would have said you were :goof: .
Why am I telling you all this? So you'll know I'm not just a bandwagon fan who started liking the Patriots once they started winning.
In researching Patriots history I also became interested in the American Football League, and have done a lot of reading about it as well. Currently I am assembling a collection of AFL mini helmets for a display, in which I'll have at least one helmet representing each of the 10 teams. (Since the Dolphins basically had the same style of helmet the four years they were in the AFL, I'll just have one for them.) Other teams like the Jets, Oilers, and Broncos will be harder to decide on since they had several different helmet styles over those 10 years.
So that's my story. I'm not here to give you guys grief, just to talk football with the devoted fans of my team's divisional rival. (In fact, the first Pats home game I went to was against the Dolphins, and I'll also be going to the Pats-Phins game at Foxboro in two weeks.)
