Changes in personnel based on knee jerk reactions are worse than useless.

Improvements, wither they are the result of new personnel or improved training or improved coaching, are what I want to see.

It's easy to say more of this and better that.

It's much more important to be able to describe how to make improvements as opposed to simple substitution.

We will see.

Ray I don’t disagree. What I struggle with is (and I genuinely don’t know the answer) what happens the year after a team shits the bed so badly losing 6 straight (if it happens) AND they retain the HC ? Are there recent examples of something like this where the next year the team drastically improves? I have this nagging feeling that the answer is “no” but I want to be wrong seeing as McCoach will be back in what I pray 🙏 won’t be a lame duck season for him. Anyone know of any recent success stories ?

I was curious about your question. The 2018 49ers lost 6 in a row and 12 overall and didn’t fire Kyle Shanahan. They went on to the Super Bowl in 2019

Wow I am pleasantly surprised. Ok, so there is hope. Please make the playoffs and regain a little swagger, fellas

The only choice moving forward is getting better.

The front office built the Dolphins to be 'win now' and the assets aren't there to do a new rebuild. Its do or die with the stars we currently have.

IMO - McD needs to find a veteran coach mentor to help guide him this offseason and also give up some O responsibilities. He needs to focus on the little things from above and let the coaches and coordinators handle the meat and potatoes. Well... after finding a new D coordinator... The Dolphins worst enemy besides the injuries are missing the small details in execution. We have to play smarter to move forward.

This is a fair question.

I don't know the answer.

I suspect there is a lot going on behind the scenes that I am unaware of. I won't let that "specific lack of knowledge" limit me in what I feel needs to be improved. I will resist letting the "specific lack of knowledge" force me to take the simplest apparent solution.

What I can do is try to analyze a perceived problem and come up with a generalized answer. Let me give you an example.

Play Calling.
We appear to be "inconsistent" with our play calling. When I say inconsistent, I am saying sometimes the plays work and sometimes they don't. What can cause this kind of problem?
1) Did the offensive players work in a well-defined and coordinated effort?
a) If the team did perform well in this regard, did it work?
b) If the team did not perform well in this regard, did the play still work.

If the team did perform well and the play worked, is it a play we can successfully use all the time against an appropriate defense? If so, can we repeat that success with our lower tier players?

If the team did not perform well and the play failed, can we identify the specific problems that caused that failure?

If the team did not perform well and the play still succeeded, can we identify why? Is it something we want to incorporate as a new play, or will we be better off getting the players to perform as they were instructed?

My generalized answer to these questions is:
1) We always want our players to perform as directed. If we stumble onto a potentially better play, we can develop it, but in the end, but if all our players are "freelancing" as opposed to "staying on script" we are doomed.
2) After we make this kind of analysis, then we are in a much better position to make improvements. Those improvements can be getting better, or more of a specific "type" of player to suit the team's needs. It might put focus on a problem with sloppy technique with individual players or across the board. We may see that there has been poor recognition of defenses causing our problems and we need plays that can be "effectively" changed at the line of scrimmage.

This is just a "rough cut" of how I feel we need to analyze the team's performance in order to improve the team.

Just getting angry and yelling about a perceived problem is no way to get better.
Feel better? - Maybe.
Make improvements? - have you won a lotto recently? - LOL

Remember, no team has all-stars at every position. We need to be able to get the most out of what we have and that demands good coaching. Good head coaches are not readily available so we better make sure we can "grow our own" via post season study and continuous improvement in the coaching staff. That is where our HCs should be coming from!

I think as long as McD is able to look at where things went wrong in the off-season and improve his approach we will see improvements.

We got Teddy and drafted Skylar to improve over Brissett and add depth and it turned out in spite of that best effort there was no improvement.
We retained Boyer, and added Ingram, Flowers, and now Chubb, and there was no improvement. We actually regressed.
Special teams did not improve over last year either. So there were no improvements in all three phases. Things went wrong.

There were improvement on offensive line, Tua play, wide receivers, and running game.

So, mixed results.

No they didn’t, they started this rebuild 3 years ago during the tank season and here we are now with that foundation.

Signing Hill and armstead we’re free agent acquisitions because we had the money to improve two crucial areas

Interesting post and topic Ray. When I step back from this huge slide of losses and the earlier expectations that the wins brought I am back again at my glass half full half empty evaluation mode that I have been stuck in these past 25 years since Don Shula.
Which means it's about evaluation and are we improving or regressing in which areas.
You have to give just about any coach or players a couple of years to formulate a real opinion.
First evaluation is we are certainly all in on winning as we have no real draft picks next year and or free agent money so it's ride this horse or die time.
I believe for to that reason McDaniel and Boyer will both be back next year.
Boyer
While we certainly do not have the shut down defense I would have hoped it's played well enough at times to say we should have won some of these losses we encountered. "If" we aquire 2 shut down corners next year will it be enough is the million dollar question to make us a good defense. Stopping a mobile QB will be to much to expect I expect.
McDaniel
He certainly rebuilt Tua and gave us the answers we needed can Tua be good enough which Flores was unable or unwilling to address. Talent wise yes Tua is good enough, health wise no Tua is not good enough. So how McDaniel keeps Tua healthy and aquires a dependable , dependent healthy backup QB will be next year's question for him.
The special teams coach needs to go not only because our special teams played poorly this year but because he is a veteran coach with a poor track record.
Grier continues to underperforms as a talent evaluator but expect him back until we aquire a new owner.

They've regressed on defense and special teams. And after a strong start, for the one dimensional offense, they stumbled to the finish line once teams took the middle of the field away. The coaching staff has shown no ability to adjust, teach or develop.

Fix all that and Miami just might win.

Improvements I want to see:

1. I want McDaniel to increase the discipline on the team. The penalties are clearly showing a lack of coordination. Hopefully our coach will learn from his virgin season, because he has great potential. I want to see 25% more “old school” in him.

2, I want to improve our defensive scheming. I hope the freakishly harsh injuries which decimated our backfield was just a fluke, but I surmise that we could have schemed better. Less zone, leaving poor Holland to attempt to cover the weaknesses of everyone else.

3. I want to improve our conditioning. Some of our injuries may be the result of a lack of strength.

4. I want improvement in our special teams. Again discipline and something is amiss with Saunders.

5. I want to see improvement in my romantic life because my gf whispered “Ray would Have done it better” in my ear post coupling last night. 😂

Cheers and a blessed happy New Year to you Sir, and much gratitude for inspiring us all!

Phins Up!
