Let's hope:
New England (7-1) wins the East
Baltimore (6-2) wins the North
Indianapolis (8-0) wins the South
Denver (6-2) wins the West
San Diego (6-2) gets a wild card spot
... and all of those teams win as many games as possible (except when playing the Phins obviously), causing the other teams in front of the Dolphins to lose.
The only other teams in the AFC with better a record than the Phins right now are:
NY Jets (4-4)
Buffalo (3-5)
Cincinnati (4-4)
Jacksonville (5-3)
Kansas City (5-3)
So, really the Phins are only 3 games behind 2 teams, 2 games behind 2 teams, and 1 game behind the Bills with 8 remaining games. In addition the Dolphins have remaining games aganist each one of these teams, except Cincinnati.
So, as a fan, I'm now rooting for these 5 teams in front of the Phins to lose as many games as possible and the other 5 teams in front of the Phins to win as many as possible. This has the potential to keep the Dolphins' hopes alive if they can finish the year similar to last year. They can't realistically afford another loss (but even 9-7 could give them a chance with the parity of the mediocre teams if the trend of parity keeps up for the rest of the season)
(this may be sort of a meaningless post, but I can't accept another playoff-less year again... yet). Is this unrealistic or are there other fans with a glimmer of hope that this can still happen?
