The Dolphin's have a league worst opponent's starting field position in the game. Opponent's average gaining 26.2 yards on kickoffs. But the last few games I swear it seams it's been worse and they're starting at 30-35 yard line each time. I normally say that team's should not carry 2 kickers and with Dolphin's already having 2 Fullbacks on the roster I know it is unlikely. But I believe we should use one of the open roster spots for a kickoff specialist who can kick it through the endzone better than Carpenter who touch backs only 8.8% of the time. I know if the defense started on the 20 yard line rather than the 30-40 yard line it would help them out alot and IMO justify having 2 kickers.

i havent been watching the games much but from what i have seen it was brandon fields doing the kicking off, not carpenter (but it could have been just the games i saw). i live in ohio and they are on TV much so i could be wrong

I completely agree. I've been saying the same thing all year. Carpenter has been KILLING us with his kickoffs. Most of the time his kicks don't go past the 10, although he's been better the last couple games. It can't be that hard to find a soccer player or somebody who can kick touchbacks consistently.

And I think his touchback numbers are overrated because I think all his touchbacks came playing Denver at Mile High where the air is so thin. He was kicking it out of the endzone that game. Aside from that, I can't remember one touchback all year, especially in Miami.

It's worth a roster spot if we can find a guy who can kick touchbacks.

a few weeks ago I was thinking the same thing but resisted the urge to post it because it rarely works. Our special teams coverage is-well-nerve racking. However to give up an already valuable roster spot for a guy that only kicks off is a last resort kind of thing. Even if they increased the maximum amount of players on a roster I would be more inclined to pick up another MLB or Guard than i would A KOS.

If we get that desperate I think instead of going that route the FO will be looking instead to replace Carpenter. :(

if our coverage team was decent we wouldn't need two kickers...

I am never an advocate of a kickoff specialist. There are few too many roster spots to use two kickers. We need to find a good two way kicker next offseason or somehow make Carpenter better on kickoffs. He is under 10 percent on touchbacks which ranks him about 27th among all kickers. He is actually tied with jay Feeley lol. He is basically the same kicker as Feeley was last year and quite similar to him this year. On a former dolphins note Olindo Mare seems quite well recovered from his groin injury in Seattle and is basically having one of the best years of any kicker, unfortunatly its on a team that does not score enough. He has a higher fg percentage(91 to 89, has hit from longer distance(51-47) has hit twice from 50, has better touchback percentage (25.7 to 9.7)thats 25 percent of his kickoffs that dont get a chance for a return compared to 10 percent, and has a better kickoff distance average (65.6 to 65.4) Pretty close until you consider that includes two onside kicks for Mare compared to none for carpenter.

Not knocking Carpenter as a field goal kicker he has done a very good job for a rookie or a vet in the main thing you have a kicker for. That being said kickoff ability is an underrated ability in the NFL because the stats dont show up easy in a box score and they are not sexy. We need more touchbacks from our kicker especially as bad as we are on coverage. he is among the lowest ranked in touchbacks and that speaks volumes of his effectiveness on kickoffs.

at the game sat i told my friend the same thing. we need to sign a guy that can consistantly get touchbacks. to me its worth it, since many of the other guys dont play anyway.

Why the hell not? I mean we have slots open and until Carpy gets his leg stronger we're pretty exposed.

100% in favor of a kick-off specialist....been saying the same thing for a few weeks now. It has definately been an area we need to upgrade! The reward outweighs the risk as long as we get a guy who bombs them into the 1st row!
