I will admit my bias right from the start. I want an offensive-minded guy to fill the void, since I believe the defense & personnel areas will be in good hands. As we all know, after the Colts/Pats game, we will be allowed to speak to the losing team's coaches. Two come to mind:

Jim Caldwell has been with Manning at Indy for five years, 2yrs as Assistant Head Coach/Quarterbacks and 3yrs as QB coach. Worth an interview.

Josh McDaniels has been the Patriots OC/Quarterbacks coach for two years. 5yrs in Pats system. Very young. But if he was in over his head, I believe he would have been shuffled by Bellichick after his first year as OC. Worth an interview.

New list, fluid and subject to change.

1) Jim Caldwell - Colts Offense just keeps humming along. Talented team, I know, but after 5yrs if Manning wanted somebody else, you have to believe he'd get his wish. 49 TDs while QB coach.

2) Marty Schottenheimer - solid at rebuilding bad teams, poor record in playoffs. May be more emotional leader who gets outcoached in big games. Still a safe choice who restores credibility.

3) Mike Sherman - better record than I remembered. If Mueller runs personnel, should be OK.

4) Josh McDaniels - Steadily promoted w/Pats since 2001. 2 yrs/Brady, 5 w/Bellichick in some capacity. Found a way to use Dillon & Maroney effectively... Ronnie & Ricky in '07? WR cupboard considered bare after Branch left, but they looked pretty good by the end of the season. Maximized talent on roster.

5) Chan Gailey - Solid if unspectacular. Will field a competent team & co-exist with Capers. Again, GM duties should be safe w/Mueller.

6) Dom Capers - Built expansion Panthers, took 'em to championship game. Didn't rebuild Texans. Depending on OC (Garrett/Henning/Saunders) would give him shot to lead a team.

7) Cam Cameron - Benefited from extremely talented team on both sides of the ball, would question him on play calling during playoffs & stint at Indiana, but he's generally well regarded in NFL so I put him here.

8) Norm Chow - he's 61--so what, OC Tom Moore at Indy is 68.

9) Jim Mora, Jr. - Even if I give him a pass for the Vick situation, still doesn't bowl me over with what he did for their defense. Rumored to bring Greg Knapp & WCO with him.

10) Mike Shula - More so than other candidates with scant experience, would need to see more positive accomplishments before consideration.

There you have it. Please share your thoughts. We all care about the Fins and want them to succeed in 2007 and beyond. We may disagree about how to get to the top and that's OK. Proud to be an armchair GM!

I will admit my bias right from the start. I want an offensive-minded guy to fill the void, since I believe the defense & personnel areas will be in good hands. I was intrigued by Brian Schottenheimer & was disappointed he withdrew from consideration. I still had some questions about him, but wish he had stuck around for the 2nd interview. Alas, he did not.

A missed FG derailed a possible SB team last year, and they are one win away another. 49 passing TDs under Caldwell as QB coach. I never thought that record of Danny's would fall in my lifetime. Worth an interview.

Josh McDaniels has been the Patriots OC/Quarterbacks coach for two years. 5yrs in Pats system. Very young. But if he was in over his head, I believe he would have been shuffled by Bellichick after his first year as OC. The Pats play like the Borg, even if an opponent has more talent. Worth an interview.

Not in the playoffs, but I also think we should extend an interview to Mike Sherman and Norm Chow, if for no other reason than to have turned over every stone. Sherman is debunking the $4mil/year rumor and so are the Cardinals. Cameron is scheduled for a 2nd interview so we'll throw him in there. Cam allegedly did not do well in his interview last year for a HC position with another team, nor (allegedly) do he do well in his first with us. If I knew whether it was because he was nervous, being a jerk, or had a conflicting vision for the team (ala Martz-not included), that would be useful info, but I don't have it so we'll keep going.

I admit I have not been sold on Marty, Mora, Gailey, or Capers as HC because while I don't mean to deny their strengths, I have a pretty good idea of their limits. But we need a coach, whether we like who's available or not. So they are in the mix as well. Mike Shula--huh? Getting screwed at Bama doesn't an NFL HC make.

I haven't been invited to any of the interviews so obviously the personalities / attitudes / leadership of these guys is somewhat of a mystery. I have no idea what stealth candidates may secretly be in play. With that disclaimer, here we go...

New list, fluid and subject to change.

1) Jim Caldwell - Colts Offense just keeps humming along. Talented team, I know, but after 5yrs if Manning wanted somebody else, you have to believe he'd get his wish. Again, 49 TDs while as QB coach. More of Danny's records sure to fall, as much as it pains me to say so.

2) Marty Schottenheimer - solid at rebuilding bad teams, poor record in playoffs. May be more emotional leader who gets outcoached in big games. Still a safe choice who restores credibility. We should be no worse than 8-8 every year. Probably better than that by year two or three.

3) Mike Sherman - better record than I remembered. If Mueller runs personnel, should be OK.

4) Josh McDaniels - Steadily promoted w/Pats since 2001. 2 yrs/Brady, 5 w/Bellichick in some capacity. 1st year was a scout. Found a way to use Dillon & Maroney effectively... Ronnie & Ricky in '07? WR cupboard was considered bare after Branch left, but they looked pretty good by the end of the season. Maximized talent around him.

5) Chan Gailey - Solid if unspectacular. Will field a competent team & co-exist with Capers. Again, GM duties should be safe w/Mueller. Beating Canes put him on the radar again, but if they hadn't...

6) Dom Capers - Rebuilt expansion Panthers, took 'em to championship game. Didn't rebuild Texans. Depending on OC (Garrett/Henning/Saunders) would give him another shot to lead a team.

7) Cam Cameron - Benefited from extremely talented team on both sides of the ball, would question him on play calling during playoffs & why stint at Indiana wasn't more successful, but he's generally well regarded in NFL so I put him here.

8) Norm Chow - he's 61--so what, OC Tom Moore at Indy is 68.

9) Jim Mora, Jr. - Even if I give him a pass for the Vick situation, still doesn't bowl me over with what he did for their defense. Not as unstable as Martz (not ranked) but speaks first/thinks later. Rumored to bring Greg Knapp & WCO with him. He slides down here.

10) Mike Shula - More so than other candidates with scant experience, would need to see more positive accomplishments before consideration.

Word of advice...dont write such looooooooooooooooooonnnnnggggg posts...cuz you may lose someone after a while...zzzzzzzzzzzzzzzz

But anyways, after listening to Joe Bailey on 790...MIA's "supposedly" this week deadline was just "rumors"...there is no timeline for hiring a HC

they want to get the "best" guy for the job

so, yeah, we may end up waiting until after the Super Bowl before we settle

Unless, they are convinced Cameron is the one

SAY NO TO SCHOTTENCHOKER...HOW MANY TIMES HAVE HIS TEAMS BEEN THE #1 SEED IN THE CONFERENCE AND LOST EARLY? THERE WAS THE DRIVE, THEN THE FUMBLE, THEN ALL THOSE DISAPPOINTING YEARS IN KC, AND NOW THEY OUTPLAY THE PATS BUT LOSE BECAUSE OF SLOPPY PERSONAL FOULS THAT KEEP PATS DRIVES ALIVE? HE'S LIKE A BETTER VERSION OF WANNSTEDT - YES, HE MAKES THE ORGANIZATION CREDIBLE BUT INEXPLICABLY IMPLODES IN THE PLAYOFFS. I LIKE CHAN GAILEY - WE WERE 11-5 BOTH YEARS WITH HIM AS OUR OC - AND WHAT TOOLS DID HE HAVE? LAMAR SMITH, JAY FIEDLER AND ORONDE GADSDEN - NOT EXACTLY AN ELECTRIFYING TRIO... I SAY GIVE GAILEY A SHOT...

I see what you are saying about Marty, and when his name first surfaced I felt the same way. Until I hear the names of some different candidates though, I think he gives us the best chance to rebuild and stabilize our team.

Had Gailey been fired from GT and was looking for a job, I'd give him OC in a heartbeat. But run the whole show? If it happens I'll support him but I don't think that's our best option.

Funny how the so called front runners are at the bottom of all our lists.

I hope you're right about the Fins not rushing to conclude this, not in love with very many of the candidates. Have to put Gailey at the top of my list, but wouldn't mind Marty Schottenheimer. Must say the Shottenchoker reference made me laugh.

I like Josh McDaniels, this kid is going to be a great coach in this league.

His only negative right now is his age (29)

He is from Canton, Ohio, attended the same college as Don Shula (John Carroll) and seems to be on the fast track with the Patriots.

He would be a roll of the dice on the future, but in a year or two he may be in huge demand.

If you wanted Brian Shotty you should want this guy.

Please, San Diego lost because of a missed FG, or a turnover that was turned right back over or the muffed punt. Change the outcome of any of those and the Pats lose. If anything the defense lost that game which is beyond Marty's control. I'd gladly take Marty REBUILDING the fins into a playoff team, choking in the finals a few years and if he can't get over the hump, you pull a Tampa and fire him, bring in some young guy to finally win your SB.

Right now, we need to rebuilt and Marty has done it a few times now.

Raiders looking at Daniels

This guy is fast moving up my HC board, too!

-- Raiders Eyeing McDaniels --

Wed Jan 17, 2007 --from FFMastermind.com

NFL.com's Adam Schefter reports the Oakland Raiders are eyeing Patriots OC Josh McDaniels, who has the distinction of becoming the youngest offensive coordinator in NFL history. McDaniels was 29 when he accepted the coordinator position Charlie Weis vacated for Notre Dame. Since last season, the Patriots have fed McDaniels a steady diet of expanding offensive responsibilities. But McDaniels might have saved his best work for the divisional round, when he showed the Raiders he could help pick up every Chargers blitz. This made him all the more attractive to Raiders owner Al Davis. Plus there's this: Whereas the Patriots reduced the responsibilities of former DC Eric Mangini last season, they have increased McDaniels'. The problem is the Raiders cannot interview McDaniels until the Patriots' season ends, which might not be until Feb. 4.
