There are a number of ways Miami can go in the draft and we all have our favorites players at this point. What I'd like to do is look at the impact some of the top guys would have if drafted by our team (random order).
Ted Ginn Jr.
A risky pick, but a guy who would likely impact the return game right away. With his speed even if he doesn't catch a lot of passes the secondary has to account for him meaning more room for Ronnie Brown to run.
Levi Brown
This pick would say a couple of things. First that Miami believes Brown has the feet to play LT (they wouldn't take him this high to play guard) and secondly that the team is not as high on Alabi as reported. While most of the LT's in this draft are of the finesse variety, Brown may be the best run blocking lineman in the entire draft and could solve a long standing need for the Dolphins.
Abomi Okoye
When was the last time Miami had an interior lineman who was an elite pass rusher? With all due resect to Manny Fernandez and Bob Baumhower, the answer is never. Okoye in the middle with Jason Taylor and Joey Porter coming off the edge is about as scary as it gets on defense.
Brady Quinn
There's a lot of debate about him and whether or not he is really a franchise quarterback. Bottom line with Quinn is that he is an excellent decision maker and I believe someone the team could win with. If you look at all the close games in the NFL, a qb who puts you in the right position and doesn't make mistakes is worth -- well a high first round pick. Problem with Quinn is I believe Miami would have to trade up to #2 to get him.
Adam Carriker
Versatile, big and strong Carriker is the type of guy who could move inside at play DT. He is also a player who will wear down people and get a lot of effort sacks. One of my favorite players in the draft.
Joe Thomas
If the draft falls the way a lot of people think, Thomas could be there at #5 when the Cardinals pick. Maybe this is a good spot for Miami to trade up. Thomas looks like an elite pass blocker and a good enough run blocker (opposite of Brown in that respect).
Patrick Willis
An intriguing possibility. Rare speed for the position and quite possibly the best defensive player in the draft. Zach Thomas is 34 for this pick would make a lot of sense.
Laron Landry
A playmaker in a secondary that doesn't currently have one unless Jason Allen emerges. Love the idea of teamming Landry with Allen at safety. I like Yeremiah Bell, but he is also very injury prone. I think Landry is a darkhorse pick for Miami as I think they will concentrate on other areas.
Adrian Peterson
Would he be too good to pass up? The Dolphins definitely need to add depth to the position, but I can see them looking to someone like Lorenzo Booker in round 3. Still if Peterson is the best RB since Ladamien Tomlinson Miami could pull the trigger.
Charles Johnson
What if Miami trades up and takes Johnson? Assuming the Trent Green trade goes through, the Dolphins would have a huge impact player on offense -- the kind of guy that opposing defenses would have to double cover in some cases and definitely account for on every play.
Alan Branch
Not sure why his stock is falling, but I do like Okoye a little better. Branch is definitely the young run stopping DT Miami needs. Rod Wright and Manny Wright both carry the underachiever tag so I don't expect much, if anything, out of them. Vickerson was cut and nobody picked him up. Fred Evans looks like a keeper, but the Dolphins definitely need talent at DT.
I think the riskiest of the potential high picks are Ginn, Staley and Anderson. I wouldn't be opposed to taking any of those guys if hte Dolphins get them by trading down and getting more picks.
