In light of a new coaching regime, here is a fresh look at some backups that should supplant some aged veterans and see what they got. This segment is about getting rid of the trash and seeing what potiential, if any, some of our prospects have since it looks like this team will be rebuilding for the next 3 years anyway.
Later Damion McIntosh and LJ Shelton
Hello Anthony Alabi. This guy was touted as having all the physical tools to play LT and just needed to bulk up. Its year 3 and he's bulked up as much as he is able. Also, Saban said this kid was a rising star. He should enter camp as the potential #1 option at tackle and see what he can do.
Later Jeno James
Hello Joe Toledo. A 4th round pick is relatively high for a guard and there is no reason he cant supplant James who is proven to be sub-par anyways. Toledo is a good athlete and another Houck draft choice that should fit his blocking scheme.
Later Zgonina
Hello Fred Evans. Evans immediatly flashed talent in camp which is a great sign for a rookie (Unlike Jason Allen). Let the guy get some gametime cus it sounds like the tools are there. Experience should have this guy playing younger and better than Zgonina. Not to mention Vickerson shouldn't be wasting away on the inactive list either.
Later Big Daddy
Hello Wright and Wright. I dont care, throw these guys into the fire and let em play. Tons of potential and we need youth, not old guys who dont even start anymore. Never ever have a washed up veteran taking up the roster spot of a developing prospect.
Later Marty Booker and Wes Welker
Hello Hagan and Vick. Booker isn't playing up to his contract and although he played better than Chambers this year, he simply isn't the answer anymore at age 31. I have not been impressed with Welker either. He seems slow and doesn't scare me as a kick returner or punt returner. Although reliable and should still have a spot low on the depth chart, he has reached his ceiling and isn't a #3 receiver or a big play returner. It should also be noted that Chambers should be demoted and is not a #1 receiver. He stays because he's still just 28 and would make a good #2 to someone else. This position is very thin, but look what Brady did with that corp. These new guys need to go out there and get some PT.
Later Joey Harrington
Hello Cleo Lemon. Harrington is what he is. Give the #2 job to Lemon and start looking for rookie prospects. Vick should also be given a shot at a QB job.
Later anyone who plays RG
Give the job to Tonui Fonoti. IF (big if) he can get his cheeseburgers under control, this guy has the size, ability and experience to play in Houcks system, which he did in San Diego. He's only 25 and at least if he stinks, he wont get pushed back 3 yards on every play. And didn't this guy make a pro bowl? In all fairness, LJ Shelton was the best RG we fielded this year, but at his age and salary, that isn't wise to keep him there.
Later Ricky Williams
Hello draft pick. This is a rebuilding team and Sammy Morris is just fine for a backup. This team needs draft picks and lots of em. If Ricky gets you a 3rd, Id jump on it. RBs are a dime a dozen and Ronnie Brown has proven he can carry the load.
Later Zach Thomas
Hello Derrick Pope/draft pick. Tough to say, but at 34 he has taken a lot of hits. Id save that cap space and let someone tell me later what a moron I am for saying this. It would be symbolic that this defense is infusing youth and Id rather invest in a rising stock that a falling one. I think its just time. Let ZT go to the Patriots and win the championship he deserves.
Later Vonnie Holiday
Hello previously mentioned D-linemen (which may include Matt Roth depending on position.)
I struggled with this one because I like the continuity Holiday, Carter, Traylor and Taylor brought to the line, but Holiday is 31 and is a FA. This is strictly a business move and I dont see paying Holiday big money with the depth behind him. On a similar note, I think Kevin Carter is indispensable. He's an excellent veteran who is durable and would be a priceless leader to the defense.
Honorable Mention
Renaldo Hill for Jason Allen
Hill had a solid season, but that was it. Just solid. I think he's an extremely valuable DB because of his versatility, but lets see why we spend a #16 pick on this other kid.
Talking coaching, FA, and drafts if just fine, but lets start with our current roster and get some take on it before we go wild with specualation.
