I think as fans it's our duty to look at this potential signing in a rational manner. And determine if we think it's the right thing to do or if it was a dumb thing to do. Not sure if this has already been posted, but one of the major knocks on Tannehill is his deep ball inaccuracy, This is a Fact Based report that "sort of" debunks the notion that Tannehill can't throw the deep pass. According to this article, taking many factors into consideration, Tannehill coming into the year was ranked 17th in deep ball accuracy, for reference Brady and Romo were 15th and 17th and Flacco was 27th. It's a pretty long and detailed read but I found it interesting. I'm not sure what his ranking is this year but what I do now is that the number of deep pass attempts seemed to be way down this year as opposed to last year, I think the difference is that Lazor's offense and maybe lack of a quality oline, called for more short passes. I don't think Tannehill has a problem with the deep pass, I think the TEAM has a problem with it in general and it shouldn't be put solely on the QB.

While I can't sat Tanny has EARNED a 15 million dollar a year contract, I CAN say that he hasn't done anything NOT TO earn it, and in todays NFL.. that's just where we are.

Another knock on him is his pocket presence, I haven't found any stat based reports on that yet. Still searching though.

My opinion, all contracts should be performance based to some degree. Team success, not primarily individual success, should reward key players for their contribution. I would want Tannehill's contract to have clauses to bump his salary to 15 million IF we make the playoffs. No playoffs then 7.5 million. Still a huge salary.

NFL contracts are NOT GUARANTEED, so why sweat the details?????

If he turns into a great franchise QB, he will earn his money, and he is still a bargain compared to how much the Bengals are overpaying for Dalton, or what the Bears are paying Cutler. If this was the NBA or NHL, where contracts are guaranteed, then I would say HELL NO, don't give Tanny that money until he has proven he is worth $100 million.

There is way too much being made about the deep ball. Its like thats all they got so they use it.

we need to sign him.... he is our guy, but yes he still has to keep developing and prove himself in year four even more.

on the deep ball thing, yes he struggles in this department.... but also yes our o-line and WR core hasnt helped him there either. now for the rankings and stats, I am not sure what the site used or did for them, but you gotta take in factor of how many he may of attempted, completed, missed himself, drop passes, how far down field, situational, etc... on Tannehill compared to al lthe other QBs too... I once again am not surewhat formula or umbers they used to rank the QBs

basically I go with my own eyeballs on the situations more or less... numbers can be nice to look at, and helpful many times, but not often great to take to heart.

LOL, I've watched this thread rather closely as it speaks to the long ball issue as not really being an issue at all. I find it pretty telling that so few from FH want to hear, or comment, about that. Regardless, thanks OP for passing on this contrary point of view (for this site, at least).

They opened up the offense at the end of the season and Thill threw deep several times. I think he can throw it and connect. Can't tell you how many drops and thru the hands there were cough D Williams cough M Wallace cough. That idiot Dalton got over 100M and he sucks. He throws the worst picks, I would take Thill over him any day of the week.

Brady dinks and dunks everywhere. The entire team has to be good enough for the QB to succeed. The deep ball can be seen as an issue but a minor one. It isn't the reason Miami has been average for years.

Tannehill is the Dolphins 17th QB since Dan Marino retired. Since drafting Ryan we have a better sense of direction, because he has the potential to be very good. In spite of continued difficulties forming a good O-line to protect him, all of Ryan's performance metrics have improved every season. He is smart, well behaved off the field and has relatively few flaws. He is the future of our team and deserves to be paid.
The contract numbers are going to seem ridiculous but that is the going market rate. The skill is probably negotiating it so there are performance based incentives but the team has some flexibility if things surprisingly go awry. Time to step up to the plate, Mike Tannenbaum.
