In your opinion whats the difference between last year and this year?

Grier/Flores got rid of some veteran players on the o-line and the defense. Granted, they weren't great, but they had experience and were better than their replacements. Gailey left and Flores refused to (or couldn't) hire another experienced Offensive Coordinator and o-line coach. Fitz, IMO, was a better QB than Tua behind a lousy o-line. Also, the defense last year looked better than they really were due to getting a lot of turnovers. They went from being the #1 third down defense to being the worst. In fact, this year's defense is near the bottom of the league in every category. Playcalling on both offense and defense is worse than last year. Very few of Grier's ten 1st and 2nd round draft picks in 2020 and 2021 are actually good enough to be on the field.

Basically, Grier and Flores spent a ton of draft picks and made a bunch of personnel moves and the result of what they did is a team even worse than the 2019 team with a gutted roster. Even average GMs and HCs should get better over time, but these idiots are getting worse!

The biggest difference, quite honestly, is luck.

We werent a particularly good team last season. We feasted off defensive and special teams scores. That isn't sustainable and this year is what you get when the trend reverses.

Also as much as I'm not a Chan Gailey fan. Gailey > This current mess.

As bad as our line has played, they weren’t that good last year. So even though they regressed they aren’t our biggest problem. Our defense hasn’t been able to get off the field. Third down and red zone defense seems to be a place where we regressed more than we have on the offensive line. However, in spite of that, our special teams units have regressed the most. It has gone from a strength to a weakness. Costing us points directly in the kicking game and indirectly through field position. We are probably sitting at 5-4 if our special teams unit alone played at the level we were at last season. IMO

People didn't like Bobby McCain because of his price tag, but I think he's a loss back there from a leadership & organisational perspective. I think most of it has been said already. Losing veteran leadership has been huge. None of us liked Gailey, but looking back, he did a far better job than the two headed abomination we currently have. Coaching has been diabolical in my opinion. I'm not basing it on fact. But, I'm basing it on .. us drafting offensive linemen early and often (fine, some may have been overdrafted, but all were seen as consensus early round picks) and they all look rubbish. I think it's nigh on impossible that they ALL look rubbish. it has to be coaching. Jackson, Hunt, Kindley - they all showed flashes last year. Now, all are horrific. New OCs who overlook the offensive coaching staff ... that has to be part of it?

I think Flores is coaching a lot more scared than he used to. He used take chances, random trick plays when you wouldn't expect. Now he's punting in the opposition half. I think courting another QB so openly puts massive doubt into everyone in your Franchise. Doubt doesn't help.

i think our OC's are showing that Tua isnt the guy. With Gailey we were so conservative, with short passes and such. Now we have 2 OCs who are trying to "unleash" Tua, and now we look worse.

Coaching and lack of veterans on the oline and lack of upgrading talent on obvious areas of need like at RB.

3rd downs on defense

We are 5-4 easy if our defense can stop teams on 3rd down.

That's simply saying defense was our strength last year and was supposed to be this year.

Our offense has not progressed enough to overcome the regression on that one thing

Coaching, player development and performance improvement has declined drastically. The GM and scouting department is atrocious. The entire organization needs to be blown up ASAP!

Getting rid of a lot of veterans under the assumption that second year starters would pick up the slack.
That and suddenly it seems like Flo has actually forgotten the rules of football.

Veteran castoffs from last season were more impactful than we thought they'd be.

-Ereck Flowers and Ted Karras brought some level stability to the line. Austin Jackson looked better with Flowers next to him.
-Kyle Van Noy made Van Ginkel look amazing. This year Van Ginkel looks pedestrian.
-Shaq Lawson gave better edge pressure
-Matt Haack not only a better punter but better holder for Jason Sanders. Sounds silly but not good to mess with routine.
-Chan Gailey was a more capable offensive coordinator then the group of co-coordinators we have now

Why/how did we go 10-6 last year and this year looks to be a losing season? With basically the same players?
Honestly? Fitzpatrick. Having him able to play when Tua cannot is a big difference than clueless Jacoby. Also, the D's first half of the year was pretty miserable.
