Barnes is a good lead blocker but is not much of a blocker in the passing game. His receiving skill has improved but with the offense we used last year, he didn't get many chances to catch the ball.
He wasn't used as much the second half of the season because Mularkey went more to a two TE set.
He didn't help us that much. I wish we would have kept Beasley. He seemed to be a much better blocker. We kept Barnes because he was supposed to have better receiving skills. As was mentioned, he didn't get many chances to catch.
He's nothing special, but the guy plays with heart and always lays it out on the field. Don't expect ANY handoff or pass plays involving him though, he's nothing more than a blocker, but like I said he plays with heart and should be a good locker room guy.
The guy is a hardnosed player that loves to hit people. His pass catching improve tremendously actually from the help of Fred Beasley, the guy he eventually beat out. His pass blocking can definitely improve, but I think it's definitely a good pick up for you guys because I'm sure the Jets didn't pay nearly as much as the Falcons did for ex-Raven FB.
As long as he can run block, which is really the main thing our offense asks of the FB, then I'll be satisfied. Poor lead blocking really hurt us last season.
