Interesting article...

Fun fact... if this is an awful draft, scout Matt Winston (brother of Eric) will need to follow Tbaum out the door... seems to have scouted near our entre draft

Winston—who had done the boots-on-the-ground research on Tunsil, dating back to his years as a top recruit at Columbia High in Lake City, Fla.—vouched for him in front of the top decision-makers in the draft room.
“Matt felt good about the player,” Tannenbaum says. “His passion for football; his good work ethic. He made some mistakes at Ole Miss, but the bottom line is he is a very good player, very talented and a good person. Matt is a good scout, and when he signs off on a player, I know that’s based on his thorough research.”
In this year’s draft, in fact, four of the top five players the Dolphins drafted were in Winston’s area: Tunsil, Baylor CB Xavien Howard (second round), Alabama RB Kenyan Drake (third round) and Texas Tech WR Jakeem Grant (sixth round). But no decision was bigger than the one Miami made on Tunsil

Thanks for posting - nice to hear about the scout who actually vouched for Tunsil. Also nice to hear about the decision makers utilizing these guys in these types of situations.

If your scouts are no good, you have no hope of improvement through the draft. If you don't trust your scouts, you don't really have an organization.

To me, this seems like a heavily Gase influenced draft. So its tough to isolate just Grier/TBaum as the fall guys. And on one side its a good thing that Gase and the FO are working in unison while on the other hand as a result in a defense heavy draft we went 75% offense. But I would say at this point the FO and Coach are tied to the hip and thats how it should be. Lets see how it plays out.

Happy to hear they leaned so heavily on the scouts. Winston must have SOME pull in that war room, because man they traded all over the place to get his recommendations.

I'm also happy to hear there are so many voices in on these picks. Sometimes we default to this being Tannenbaum alone, but this is clearly different than a Dallas Jerry Jones scenario where you can see everyone smiling vacant smiles while they twiddle their thumbs and give Jerry thumbs up. Gase, at bare minimum, seems to have a lot of say in who they move forward with.

I thought the same thing reading it.

There are only two options.
1) It's all 'baum's fault in which case he has to go. All below him have no track record - they're just going along to keep their jobs.
2) It's not all 'baum's fault. As for this draft, Howard is called a VJ pick. If he fails, VJ has to go. The O players are said to have Gase's fingerprints all over them. If they fail, Gase has to go. Grier stays because he's just doing what 'baum wants whether he likes it or not. Since we don't know his picks, he can't be blamed. Winston? Has to go.

A more sane approach is to wait until at least game 8. Those calling Howard a great pick have no standing in their evaluations any more than those arguing the draft sucks. Look, admit it or not, Gase and VJ had significant say. Winston, apparently, had some say. That should put the myth 'baum goes by metrics to a justifiably cruel death. And I find it hypocritical to compliment 'baum for selecting Tunsil in spite of the perceived negative but blast him for taking other players because they HAVE negatives. Not real creative.
I didn't like all the trading. I know nothing about anyone taken below R3 except for the posts here and some articles. I still feel the OL is one OG short and Miami needs depth at LB. Maybe that can be corrected in the next few weeks, maybe not. But stating absolutes at either extreme is evidence of emotional analysis instead of intellectual analysis. No one is certain beyond doubt Tunsil will be a top OT. No one is certain Drake will bust. Sanity requires proof. Proof requires waiting for the evidence.

This was interesting to me because I thought the Dolphins came out on Thursday and said that they knew about the video prior to the draft. Maybe my memory is faulty.

No you are right. I remember that too. Can't recall if it was a direct quote or indirect.
