Dolphin fans all over the country have been asking the same question three weeks into the season, what’s wrong with the Dolphins? The team does not seem to be playing with fire. The team looks unprepared, making untimely mistakes in critical situations. Speculation hovers between Chad Henne not being an NFL QB and Tony Sparano not being an NFL coach. All these indicators seem to point to a coach going through the motions with his future already determined.

The blunder Stephen Ross made chasing Jim Harbaugh after last season may have deep repercussions with the current coaching staff. Jeff Ireland accompanied Ross on his foolish adventure and in doing so; he lost the trust of his coach. The bottom line is, Ross made the decision to fire Sparano and keep Ireland even though it didn’t come off. Ross, roundly criticized for trying to hire a coach while still having one under contract, let Sparano know his true thoughts.

At that point Ross, forced to back off a coaching change, signed Sparano to an extension. The damage was done. Sparano knew not only his owner, but his GM had betrayed him. He asked the GM to bring in competition for Chad Henne at the QB position, but his wishes went unheard. Tony Sparano was hung out to dry. He knew it and unfortunately, everyone in the locker room knows it as well.

Tony Sparano may have felt in his heart during those trying moments he should walk away, but his pride would not let him. Sparano knew when the air cleared from Ross’ error in trying to hire Harbaugh, he would be out of a job. His only hope at redemption was to coach the Dolphins into the playoffs while the wheels of deceit and change were spinning behind his back.

Leadership starts at the top and filters down, Ross and Ireland had deceived their coach and then expected him to be the leader they had proved incapable of being. Not finding a QB to compete with Henne further solidified the coach’s feeling that the leadership wanted the eventual coach to make his own choice. Whether any of this is true does not matter because the seeds of discontent were sowed in the Miami Locker room.

If Stephen Ross was willing to go after Jim Harbaugh on the sleigh, what was to stop him from clandestine meetings with John Gruden? Maybe Gruden wanted to make the Glazers pay the final year of the salary they owed him when they fired him in Tampa and then move on to Miami. What if there was already a sweetheart deal waiting for Gruden? What if Gruden said, don’t bring in Kyle Orton, let me figure it out when I get there.

All this is pure speculation but once the owner opened Pandora’s Box the chain of leadership from owner, to GM, to coach, to player was broken. Whether any of the speculation has a shred of truth means nothing, what is important is the owner and GM did not treat the coach with respect. Without this firm base of unified commitment, the chain of command is broken and the Dolphins now look like a team that is broke.

Ross may look to his coach or QB as his problem, perhaps closer study the mirror would be a better place to start. Unfortunately, for suffering Dolphin fans, the team will continue to flounder until the leadership chain is restored.

orton blows had a pick 6 today and the crowd was screaming for tebow

Had Ross bagged Harbaugh then everyone would have forgotten about Sparano's ego.
Not too mention there would be threads about how we have a great take charge owner.

this "ross betrayed sparano" bull**** has to stop. HE DIDNT HIRE THE GUY. **** sparano!!! hes a terrible coach and the signs have been there since day one. seriously - who in their right mind would follow the guy???? ross went after harbaugh - so what!!! sparano is a multimillionaire because of his job, and hes terrible at it. WHY should ross owe him ANYTHING???? he doesnt!! he didnt even hire the guy. he didnt get harbaugh, and he decided to take a year and settle in to ownership in the NFL with a lockout looming, give sparano a chance to prove himself under less than desirable conditions, and he made sparano an even richer man by giving him an extension HE DIDNT DESERVE. and sparano failed miserably - hes a loser. **** this he betrayed sparano bull****. he didnt owe him ANYTHING!!!

it was an intelligent move. he hasnt allowed any poor veteran contracts, they cleaned the books, and the roster is very young. its positioned for the future well. now he can go get his coach. build from the ground up. instead of these half *** rebuilds weve tried in the past.

would u prefer he made a rash poor choice on some dumb *** unproven coordinator or line coach that so many would lobby for??? and be stuck with him for 3-4 years of poor performance - heading into a lockout with no time to prepare a team and the uncertainty that a season would even be played???? think!!!

instead he prepared, has had time to evaluate the franchise, and potential coaching candidates - so that he MAKES THE CORRECT CHOICE. let him hire his guy. wait and see. and **** sparano - he got more than he deserved anyways

Article speculates. There's nothing concrete in there.

According to Jeff Darlington, as he reported long ago during the actual episode, Stephen Ross actually made overtures toward Bill Cowher via Carl Peterson. He also, of course, interviewed Jim Harbaugh. There's no smoking gun report that says he met with Gruden, but there are rumors Gruden was not interested in coming back yet, as he's making too much money in television.

I heard this from a knowledgeable, reliable source- Stephen Ross feels that he overpayed for a lousy team. He's doing everything that he can to recoup money (fractional ownership sales to celebrities, NFL Fan Vision-which apparently sucks, all the glitzy showbiz/entertainment stuff, the Gators debacle, catering to/begging the fan base). So despite the marketing/hype, including the questionable Gators thank you debacle the day of the Broncos game, things are not going well. I don't blame the guy for going after Harbaugh, but Ross seems more awkward and ill suited for football than Huizenga was.

I'm not a big fan of Sparano or Ireland, but 0-4 spells doom for most any coach. Sparano seems better suited as a positional coach, and every time I see him I think of Andy Kaufman's alter ego Tony Clifton.

I've heard this theory, and I think that it's plausible- Jimmy Johnson screwed over the Dolphins by convincing Huizenga to bring in Dave Wannesdedt, and Parcells did the same with Ross and Sparano. The common thread- both uber competetive guys ( Johnson and Parcells) wanted a very average to poor coach to follow them, so in hindsite they look better. Nefarious, but I think possible. Again, I don't HATE Sparano as I did Wannestedt- but I'm definitely not a fan, from the 24-7 sunglasses to how he speaks/carries himself, to his most likely best suited to being a positional coach (he might have screwed the pooch as per being an OL coach though) on the NFL level. And Ireland- he's ok but I just don't like him.

Ross may be more ill suited to NFL ownership than even Huizenga. He bought into this team for what, a billion dollars? and then saw the economy tank, if I have the time line right. He'll wait until the year is over, dump Sparano and then (my best guess) pick up Cowher or Gruden. And I'll be fine with that- not so sure about Carl Peterson.

This theory actually makes sense from a business point of view. This season is a wash, so why waste money on high-priced FAs who may help the team win now? That would only lower the cap room available for the next HC/GM. I say GM too, because everyone hired by Parcells needs to go.

Had Ross bagged Harbaugh then everyone would have forgotten about Sparano's ego.
Not too mention there would be threads about how we have a great take charge owner.

History is written by the victors.

this is true, and personally i would have loved to see harbaugh. i think hes going to make an excellent coach. hes got "it". he was "captain comeback" when he was an NFL quarterback, and he turned a perennial loser in stanford into a college football smashmouth powerhouse in a very short time. i always said kirk gibson should have been a manager in the big leagues sooner for these same type of reasons. that passion for the game - the heart, the experience, the pedigree that any player would follow. ross went after the right guy. he took a shot at least.

jim harbaugh was never coming to miami though. he grew up a 49ers fan, his family was living right down the street from candlestick, he would start off his coaching career in a division where not a single team could even play .500 football IN A DIVISION FULL OF SUB .500 TEAMS. do u know how hard that is?? that means the NFC is not just AWFUL. its WAAAAAYYYYYY BEYOND AWFUL. and tom brady doesnt take up residence in the NFC west. in otherwords, it was a much better place to start a coaching career and develop a winning culture over the next couple years. jim harbaugh was never coming to miami and THAT is why the offer was never made. hey at least ross didnt leave any stone unturned with the guy. im willing to withhold any judgement until we see who ends up leading this team over the next couple years.

Ross has taken alot of heat, but some of the things hes taken heat for MAY have actually been the most intelligent, prudent thing to do for the future of this franchise

First of all... if Tony should feel betrayed by anyone.. it should be himself.. He received a dream job, that only a handful of people get the priveledge of being and that is a head coach in the NFL..

Second, if his ego prevented him from stepping down as head coach, he is a bigger fool than I give him credit for..

Lastly about Ross.. There is no such thing as paying too much for a bad team.. EVERY single team in the NFL has increased in value each and every year and the profitability is very high..

This just goes to show we have complete morons in charge of our favorite team!!

but I'm definitely not a fan, from the 24-7 sunglasses
You do realize that he has an eye condition which requires him to wear sunglasses. He's not actually trying to be a douche. Now, if he starts popping his collar...

While that article is pure speculation, it's probably what a lot of people are thinking. It's difficult to get 100% into your job or follow a guy 100% when you know he's only keeping the seat warm for the next coach.

Which sucks because I don't think the team is nearly as bad as they are playing.

@hightemp, relax bro. Breath, in - out - in - out. Your scaring the children.

thats the plan!!! lol

listen i said at the end of last year sparano was through. just as the one of the posters here indicated. it was CLEAR this team flat out quit. with tonys job on the line. they laid egg after egg. they DIDNT WANT TO PLAY FOR THE GUY. plain and simple. brandon marshall was questioning sparano practically in PRESEASON LAST YEAR. thats ridiculous!!! then they ricky williams comments about sparanos approach to the game. basically calling him out - saying he has NO IDEA how to approach winning games in the NFL. these comments were backed up by jason taylor last year. then reinforced by some things he said on dan lebatard show. and quite frankly, these things were all evident right from the get go with sparano. do u remember right from the beginning how sparanos game management was questioned time and time again early in his career he did some really dumb **** during games. really poor decisions. but they won games that first season and the noise wasnt as loud. the problem never actually went away tho. sparano is a TERRIBLE coach on gameday. strategically he makes poor decision after poor decision. as a coach, the ONE THING he can do is put his team in the best position to win games based on his decisions, he doesnt. he makes it more likely we lose by his poor choices over and over and over.

the guy is just a clown. he looks like a clown, he acts like a clown, the players talk about him like hes a clown, hes a clown.

and frankly im just sick and tired of seeing the team i refuse not to root for being run by idiots. i mean even the team looks like clowns now. those aqua pants that sparano just loves to wear look ridiculous. its hard to watch.

remember the days when it was aqua tops/white pants at home and white/white on the road?? u look good in uniform, feel good in uniform, youll play better - jerry rice said that and i agree.

im just curious why the team even looks like clowns in uniforms so often. get the **** fixed already!!! its unbearable to watch!!! and im sick of watching fist pumps and playing for field goals. its nauseating!!!

so forgive me, but its LONG OVERDUE. and i find it hilarious how many people rushed to his defense last year when it SHOULD have been OBVIOUS to everyone this guy was done. dont hear anybody saying **** about it NOW do you??? where are all those sparano homers now??? its only been 4 games

sparano survived because of the lockout. ross cut back spending. thats WHY orton isnt in miami, and thats why soliai hasnt been extended yet. and quite frankly i dont blame the guy. the books need to be as clean as they can be for the new regime. and ross knew last year sparano wasnt his coach - THANK GOD we didnt go out and try to patch together some pieces that may not fit in the future and would have provided false hope. this team needs TALENT, we need PLAYMAKERS. and you must find them in the draft

Ross didn't make a mistake trying to get Harbough, the mistake was not getting him. Sparano sucked before this took place, nothing has changed, and thats the problem.

I don't think it was some phantom HC in waiting who told Ross not to commit to Kyle Orton. Hell, if even Elway, one of the best all time QBs preferred anyone but him and other QB-needy teams courted the likes of Young, McNabb and Jackson -but not him, as clueless as our so-call "brainiacs" might have been desperately trying to slap on a bandaid fix, it's likely that Ross himself wasn't and didn't need anyone behind the scenes telling him not to **** away more $$. If anything, it was Carl Peterson advising him it was folly.

I am aware of that condition, but maybe he could wear tinted contact lenses instead. Regardless, I look at Tony Sparano and I see Tony Clifton. And Tony Clifton is not NFL head coach material. Not that appearances are everything, it's just what I see.
