This is a run down from PFF on team grades for the Dolphins on all aspects of the game between 2012 and 2013. Understand that all grades are based on "Individual Performance" and not as a group. Their grades are averaged out between good and bad, and how Phins players played in both years.

Offense

In 2012 overall, we had a +10.4 grade, and this year a +4.6 grade. This includes the entire O on individual play.

Passing- 2012- a plus 12.5. This year. a plus 31.2. RT, WR's, and TE are much better.

Run- 2012- minus 2.3. This year, a plus 5.3. This will cause a commotion. They did not like Bush last year in missing many openings, and like DT for his effort in getting the most he could of what was available.

Pass Block- 2012- plus 0.2. This year, a minus 1.7. This includes all pass blocking, TE's RB's, WR's, and the OL. From Columbo to this year, about the same.

Run Block- 2012- minus 3.2. This year, a MINUS 58.1. ALL run blocking has been horrible, and I do not recall seeing worse.

Defense

In 2012 overall we had a plus 64.9 grade. This year, a plus 60.9 grade. Around the same but, big difference in how.

Run D- 2012- plus 32.1. This year, plus 1.1. HUGE difference here with only a few new players. LB's a problem.

Pass Rush- 2012- plus 3.8. This year, plus 37.8. BIG improvement with Wake not having a big year.

Coverage- 2012- plus 17.2. This year, plus 1.0. Hard to believe with Grimes but, this include all pass coverage, and Jones, LB's have not been getting it done.
--------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Special Teams- 2012- plus 53.7. This year, a minus 6. Aside from Fields, our ST's have been a disaster.

We changed our team dramatically from last year. The passing attack is much improved, and I cannot wait until we can click with more time to throw. We will be scary good. We need to fix the run to be average or better, and add a couple f blockers. This helps all.

On D, we pretty much got what we bargained for in being much better in pass rush but, no one would have guessed the run d would be this bad. Ellerbe and Jones need to play as they can, and have proven.

We played some better QBs this year, how does that factor into the year over year grades?

Our lack of a run game has killed this team. We haven't been able to sustain drives which would help Tannehill, the pass blocking, and the defense. If we had a run game, we'd be able to protect our already stout defense and would be able to pull out more of these close games.

OL needs to be the primary focus of this off season.

I'm not a fan of PFF's player ratings, but all I'll say is that I don't think our running backs should have a positive grade in any facet of play.

There are a lot of factors that change from year to year. It very difficult to take a set of numbers and suggest they do much of anything but describe a particular number set. I would be hard pressed to think our pass defense is worse this year than last, especially when you consider the increase in interceptions. However it wouldn't surprise me to find out that other teams are passing better against this year because we're not pressuring the QB like we did last year. Or maybe we are, it's hard to tell. Look at the number and tell me either of those teams (2012 v 2013) are better than the other, but this year's teams is (probably) 2 wins better, a 28% increase (or 1 win and 14%). See what I mean? 28% improvement sounds pretty good right? What does it mean?

Stats are fantastic for discussion and looking at tendencies. If we know we're terrible at one stat it would be great to improve. Does that make the team better? Maybe. Lots of factors go into the analysis of stats, people have wonderful careers doing it. And teams have adopted types of Sabermetrics across the pro sports spectrum (no MLB team doesn't use it). In the end they're just numbers when only one number matters, wins.
