Dan Marino led the league in sack rate (lowest in league) 10 times including 7 straight seasons. Does the qb have anything to do with sacks??

The QB has a lot to do with sack rates....

But what many people do not realize - those of who did not watch Dan play week in and week out in his career....Is that he was an absolute freak of nature...

One cannot and is ill advised to compare most any QB to Marino.

And one thing he had in spades was that 6th sense - the intuitive capacity to sense that he was going to be hit and a terrific knack for being amazingly efficient in his ability to move in the pocket to avoid the sack. Think of Rothlesberg only I believe BETTER by a good shot.

Yes the QB has an effect but it also helps to have Richmond Webb, Dwight Stephensen and Keith Sims standing in front of you most of your career.

Well, there's that for sure, but you didn't mention his phenomenal quick release and that he generally had multiple probowl linemen - especially pass blockers. Early in his career he also had receivers that got open with regularity and that doesn't hurt.

Bruce Smith might have had 30 more sacks if it wasn't for Marino's release. The utter speed of that release hasn't been seen in the game before or since his retirement. People try and compare Marino to other QB's and all I can say is the closest is Manning but he doesn't have the arm and release Marino had and he gets sacked more often.

Marino had that side step that made many a defender look like chump laying on the ground.

absolutely and while he wasn't a scrambler he had excellent footwork and a lightning release.

Howie Long once said that he had fly eyes. His eyes were always darting around when he was in the pocket.

watch this clip, I don't think the position was ever played any better

In 1988 Marino passed 606 times and was sacked (digest this) SIX TIMES

Reality check, I miss 1984. Don't think we will see play like that again...amazing talent

he threw 23 INts so maybe he threw those at the expense of getting sacked but still an amazing #.
