1. Houston Texans - Reggie Bush*, RB USC
If the Texans don’t trade down they‘ll use this pick on Bush. They already have a decent back in Dominick Davis, but Bush can do so many more things… return punts, play the slot receiver, etc.
2. New Orleans Saints - Matt Leinart, QB USC
Matt Leinart? Vince Young? Jay Cutler? It doesn’t matter as long as it isn’t Aaron Brooks!
3. Tennessee Titans – D‘Brickashaw Ferguson, OT Virginia
The Titans still have a lot of rebuilding to do, and while quarterback Vince Young is a strong possibility, an anchor for their offensive line who could start immediately makes more sense.
4. New York Jets – A.J. Hawk, OLB Ohio State
Adding Hawk would give new head coach Eric Mangini two playmaking linebackers to build his 3-4 defense around.
5. Green Bay Packers – Mario Williams*, DE North Carolina State
A consistent pass rush would do wonders for the development of their young secondary and Mario Williams is the best defensive end in college football.
6. Oakland Raiders – Haloti Ngata*, DT Oregon
The Raiders won’t be tempted by Young or Vanderbilt quarterback Jay Cutler here simply because Al Davis likes Andrew Walter. Look for the Raiders to grab a playmaker on defense in the first round.
7. San Francisco 49ers – Michael Huff, DB Texas
The 49ers have a lot of holes and they could look at a guy like Texas defensive back Michael Huff because of his versatility to play cornerback or safety.
8. Buffalo Bills – Vernon Davis*, TE Maryland
If Eric Moulds leaves during the offseason, the Bills could use another receiver, but none is worth picking this high. Davis would be a big upgrade at tight end and would help by drawing some attention in the passing game.
9. Detroit Lions – Jimmy Williams, CB Virginia Tech
This is a bit of a reach, but like Huff, Williams could play either safety or corner, and would really help solidify Detroit’s secondary. The Lions could also opt to add a pass rusher like Penn State’s Tamba Hali or maybe even consider a quarterback here.
10. Arizona Cardinals – Vince Young*, QB Texas
With Kurt Warner under contract, the Cardinals can bring Young along slowly. And they have a nice collection of weapons to complement him already in place.
11. St. Louis Rams - Tye Hill, CB Clemson
This might look like a big reach right now, but once Hill displays his athleticism at the NFL Combine, I expect his stock to rise.
12. Cleveland Browns - Chad Greenway, LB Iowa
Linebackers are key to Crennel‘s defense and I expect him to continue concentrating on solidifying the defensive unit early in the draft.
13. Baltimore Ravens – LenDale White*, RB USC
Jamal Lewis came on strong toward the end of the ‘05 season, but the Ravens have decided to not use the franchise tag to keep him off the open market, so he may not be back with the team in ‘06. White is another bruising type of runner who could fill the same role.
14. Philadelphia Eagles – Winston Justice*, OT USC
Both of the Eagles starting tackles are over 30 and Jon Runyun is an unrestricted free agent so he might not be back.
15. Atlanta Falcons - Tamba Hali, DE Penn State
Brady Smith will be 33 before the season begins and the Falcons could use another pass rusher in the rotation at defensive end.
16. Miami Dolphins – Jay Cutler, QB Vanderbilt
If the Dolphins don’t land Minnesota’s Daunte Culpepper, they won’t let Cutler get past this point. Once he works out at the NFL Combine, he could easily move into the top ten.
