Interesting point mad by MiamiRon on profootball talk. Which I think should give Ireland even more credit.

You have to give it to Ireland
He drafted the replacement for Matt Moore
who is in his last year of his contract

He drafted a potential replacement for
Jake Long who is in his last year of his contract
with Jonathan Martin

He drafted a potential replacement for
Cameron Wake who is in his last year of
his contact with Oliver Vernon

He drafted the potential replacement for
Anthony Fasano who is in his last year
of his contract with Michael Egnew

He drafted the potential replacement for
Reggie Bush who is in the last year of his contract
with Lamar Miller

Savings could be significant
Fasano’s cap hit is $4.5 million
Long’s cap hit is $11.2 million
Bush’s cap hit is $6 million
Wake’s cap hit is $800k

New contracts for the above could cost
$30 million or more per year

Amazing coincidence that Ireland's first 5 picks
play the same positions of 5 players who are in their
last year of contracts???

negotiating ploy or replacements??
It should be interesting seeing how things play out

Interesting point indeed. I had already thought about this but would still hate to lose Big Jake if the price is right.

not so much a negotiating ploy as it is covering your bases and finding guys who will strengthen your team... also some are potential replacements... SOME, not all.

It is better to draft players as supplements rather than replacements. I believe we will have enough cap room to sign all of them as long as we dont bring in any high prices free agents next year.

why is everyone obsessed with replacements? can we not just be adding to the team? whats the point in drafting martin, then trading jake long? we'll be back to square one with a huge whole on the right side of the line! the same goes for the others.

Listening to some of the guys here you would think they wanna trade away our good players just for the sake of getting more draft picks. Which I don't understand.

If all of them leave, I am convinced that Ireland has to go and that no one wants to play here if they have a choice to go elsewhere.

Wrong on some of your points but, Ireland has done well on both of the 2 drafts that he has had complete control of !

I agree with Long, but upgrading the TE position while saving money would be a very good thing, same for the RB position. No way you pay Bush 6 mil a year if Miller and the RB from ND can be just as good or better for less.

I like Long and hope we keep him, but he better stay healthy this year or I wouldn't break the bank for him either. He is not the light quick moblie OLman that Philbin is incorporating, while Martin is. If Martin has a good rookie year it would not surprise me in the least to see them let Long walk. JMO

Interesting post. Another thing to consider is the new coach wanting HIS OWN players. Not saying all those guys will be replaced but usually over a draft or two the new guy gets his own players in place. He has a vested interest in them as they forever will be his guys. in a year or two I suspect most of the Parcells type players will be phased out in favor of west coast type guys.

Better Not! Be
I'd hate to see him go but Jake opted out of the last year of his contract which means to me he wants more money. He's counting $12.8 million against the cap this year, more than 10% of our total cap space for just one guy...that seems a bit much for a non skill position. I don't think he's worth more than he's getting right now. He's either the highest paid LT in the NFL right now or at least in the top 3...if he's looking for $13 million a year I don't think it makes much sense. Dolphins need to prepare for life without Jake if the asking price gets too high and I think it might.

With Jake they may franchise him and string him along instead of a long contract. First they can see if he's all healed up and second they can break in a potential replacement.

Long isn't going anywhere.

Don't be surprised if he is gone after this year. The ONLY great thing we have going for us is his injury concerns over the years. Otherwise I'd give him up for a 1st and 3rd in a heartbeat.
