Interesting read about Grier and draft

Thought that article was written by miamidolphins.com lol. Like a guy with 3 ex-wives, Griers chances of marrying a keeper doesnt actually increase the more times he does it.

To be fair, Grier has a track record of hits and misses drafting. He's been the very definition of average. My problem entrusting him with the rebuild is there is more to being a GM and the article doesn't look at the whole body of work.

We have a lot of picks because we traded away talented and pro bowl players. I'm not giving Grier credit for simply accumulating picks. Then there's trades, free agents, contract extensions, cuts, etc. I don't have faith that he can build a cohesive team. It's just really hard to do in a competitive league and he has been heavily involved on this dysfunctional team for years.

Churning the coaching staff has killed us as every coach ended up retooling the prior coaches roster and there are many former Dolphins around the league. Plus that churning makes it difficult on Grier as he must readjust his drafting philosophy to fit the new coaching staff and that takes time. Sure you can call this logic just an excuse for an inferior job but its a fact. Bill Billicheat blows thru draft picks but is great at accumulating them.
Getting past this though IMO Grier went all in on Flores and if Flores fails then Grier is out. If Flores struggles because of inferior talent then Grier is out. So yea Grier is on the hot seat this year to get the players in Flores needs.

I think the article must have been written by one of Grier’s relatives. Because the Dolphins have the least talented roster in the entire NFL and Grier has been involved in player selection for years with the Dolphins.

Stating that drafting Harris was a mistake and that the Watts could have been the pick instead if the Dolphins had decided to draft another DE instead is just a way of giving Grier an excuse for a terrible pick.

Grier has been terrible in drafting offensive linemen and this unit has been a major issue for several years.

Drafting Tunsil and Fitzpatrick is irrelevant now because neither of them are with the team today and the Dolphins have huge holes at Left Tackle and Free Safety.

Other than Howard, there really isn’t a pro bowl type player on the entire roster. I am happy this writer has confidence in Grier’s ability to rebuild this team through quality drafting and free agent signings but I just don’t have that same confidence.

I hope he doesn’t screw up the next two drafts but I have to admit that I really don’t expect him to still be the GM after the 2021 season is over. I suspect the next GM will once again be task with rebuilding the Dolphins.

I thought it was a "fluff" piece? Is it a puff piece?

This article pretty much sucks. It points to two guys we traded in Tunsil and Fitzpatrick as proof of Grier's drafting ability because they were selected to pro bowls lol. Sorry, but pro bowl are popularity contests despite what some on here might think. Both players made a lot of news early in the season because of their trades so they were recognizable names on the pro bowl voting list. Minkah has come up with a bunch of turnovers but he didn't cause any of them...he was just in the right place at the right time...basically the same way Kiko Alonso used to come up with turnovers for us when he was here. Last week Minkah had 1 tackle for Pitt against Arizona. He disappears a lot in games. Tunsil, I believe, has given up something like 5+ sacks and has 10 or more penalties this season. I think someone mentioned he was like the 8th or 9th rated tackle in the AFC...good, but not top 4 that should be going to the pro bowl for the AFC.

Now, there's no doubt that players who leave Miami end up playing better at other spots. Part of that is the talent level of this team, as a whole, sucks (who's in charge of the talent acquisition here?). Some of that is misidentification of players ability and scheme fit (who's in charge of talent acquisition here again?). So this isn't just about drafting talent, it's about drafting the right talent, it's about building a team with players that compliment each other, it's about building around a QB, whoever that might be, that will highlight his strengths. Things that haven't happened here in decades.

I'll say I'm hopeful, but not optimistic.

I think that's why they bought in Reggie McKenzie and the other guy to help Grier

Marvin Allen is the other guy. I'm still in wait and see mode.

McKenzie made some awful moves in free agency...anyone who signs Philip Wheeler (as we all should know) should probably not be involved in free agency. He did draft Carr, Amari Cooper and Khalil Mack but the team never posted a winning record in his 6 years as GM.

Allen I don't know much about. I know he was Director of College Scouting in KC for a while and was the Bills National Scout for 2 years (a demotion from KC).

All I know is they better kill it in this next draft we need to come away with at least five starters

The thing with evaluating drafts is that hindsight is 20/20. For example; every team in the NFL had a chance to draft Drew Brees, Russell Wilson and Tom Brady. That is 3 future Hall of Famers 31 teams missed out on (in each of their draft years). All the drafts before this rebuild are in the past. Just have to hope the additional guys we brought in identify and draft the right guys in the upcoming draft.

League average is hitting on about 30% of the picks...we've clearly been below that. However, that average is based on 7 picks in 7 rounds, 1 pick per round. We have 5 in the first 64 picks. There's really no reason, with how bad the talent is on this team, that every pick we get in the first 3 rounds should be a starter. Now, would they be good enough to start for any team? That remains to be seen. The quality of starter has been an issue. Think about guys like Jonathan Martin, Dallas Thomas, Billy Turner...all starters and all sucked. Drafting starters shouldn't be an issue. Finding playmakers/difference makers has been the real issue.

Sometimes I just wonder what we would look like if we just kept the same team and invested in OL last year...
