Interesting story on the 3-4 defense

very cool. all true. that's why i have been against a lineman for the #1 pick. well, one of the reasons. good read.

i have never been a huge fan of the 3-4 only because it requires so many special types of players to run effectively and it is virtually impossible to control the line of scrimmage when your DL is getting manhandled so often... Having said that when you do have the personnel it is certainly fun to watch as it is such an attacking defence...

Lawrence Taylor was an animal in there and I don't think there was a more fun player to watch... He was the very definition of 'Disruptive'... it was always amazing to see how surprised QB's and OL were to see him in the backfield... He absolutely changed the way the position was played.

That was a good read because it gives an idea of what type of players should be used to make the 3-4 work and the whole thing about Howie Long being such an effective end in the 3-4 similar to Richard Seymour.

3-4's get picked apart by spread offenses and it's just our luck that were going to switch when the NFL is filling up with spread offenses. Don't make much sense to me.

I disagreed with some of that. The Dolphin's 53 defense was 3-4 and they played it before the Pats did it in '73. It also was really slanted to a DL's point of view. The advantage of having more LBs on the field is that you have more fast athletes. This creates confusion for the O b/c they don't know where the rush is coming on each play. It's also more effective against the short passing game b/c you have more people in the lanes. It is IMO weaker against the run unless your LBs are very good at filling lanes though.

Not really, If your linebackers are young and athletic you will have no problem. The chargers linebackers/ CB put a beatdown on the PAts. The partiots linebackers are old so they will get pick apart.

Those teams are constantly involved in shootouts against teams like the Colts, Rams etc..etc. The Giants may have 1 or 2 a year but the 4-3 still stands as the most effective D. The Tampa 2 is also better than the 3-4 and holds strong year after year.

I disagree. Those shootouts are against the nickel and dime defenses that spread teams usually face. The base 3-4 puts more pressure on the QB than the base 4-3. I believe that the best defenses are the ones that put pressure on the QB.

Either way it can't be as bad as last year I guess. So their is no point in debateing really.

Well, the truth is there's no right or wrong answer. Each defense has it's proponents, strengths and weaknesses.

I was a bit miffed that they said the Pats were the first to use the 3-4 in the NFL when the Dolphins had just won the SB playing a 3-4 the year before. Maybe they were just confused by the name "53" defense.

It's all part of the NFL/Patriots love affair and conspiracies IMO. Nothing surprises me when it has to do with the NFL and the Pats. I wish congress would take this crap over and clean out everyone in the NFL commisioners office and in N.E.

Actually...the 53 defense was created because of injuries to the D-line....the Dolphins only had two healthy DE's...Vern Den Herder and Bill Stanfill...so they tried using Matheson...in a exhibition game against Atlanta...he acquired three sacks in the first quarter...it was a off shoot of the Oklahoma 5-2 alignment. From there on...it's history.
