Interesting tidbit on Joe rose that makes my heart sink a bit...

I think one of the biggest problems people have with Jeff Ireland is they don't know when he was in control vs. Tuna. That being said, if you want to look at the players that were drafted and signed as free agents over the last 4 years and compare them with other GM's (not what you did on Madden last night) then people would realize that Ireland has aquired many starters / contributors over the last 4 years, and has an eye for talent, and has done a much better job then he is given credit for. Has he had his fair share of misses, but every FO in the league has.

This is jeffs first real draft. The other drafts had too many cooks for them to be proclaimed jeffs draft. Make no mistake parcels made those early picks. Sparano has no clue on talent. judge him by this years draft.
what happened to last years draft?

In Ireland's (cant wait to see all the replies blaming parcells) 4 drafts, we have 1 Probowler and out of his 1st draft class he have exactly 1 player left...Jake long...

Kinda hard to miss with the 1st overall when you take the safe pick huh...

Ae you saying Bill Parcells, the Executive VP of Football Operations, had nothing to do with whom the team drafted?

I'd imagine that it you kept any GM for a period of 20 years that this type of bad stretch would happen to 99 percent of them at least once during that 20 year stretch. I'm not trying to make any excuses, because it is definitely disappointing, but it could happen to any GM. For all of the "experts" we have on this sight, not one of them would have done squat if they were a GM (taking out their new "would-have-takens" based on hindsight).

Are you saying the GM and had of player personnel, scouting, and development shares no blame?

Honestly, it wasn't that bad of a draft all things considered. If you look at other teams, the majority of their draft class is gone after 5 years too. You are lucky if you get 3 guys from a class to stick around longer than 5 years.

At least in this draft, you had 5 guys who contributed something in the past few seasons. Even if Henne wasn't everything we wanted, he did contribute and win some games, so not a total failure.

Let's compare this draft with our rivals 2008 drafts. (still on the team in green)

Patriots:

1 10 (10) Jerod Mayo ILB Tennessee
2 31 (62) Terrence Wheatley CB Colorado
3 15 (78) Shawn Crable OLB Michigan
3 31 (94) Kevin O'Connell QB San Diego State
4 30 (129) Jonathan Wilhite CB Auburn
5 18 (153) Matthew Slater S UCLA
6 31 (197) Bo Ruud OLB Nebraska

Jets

1 6 (6) Vernon Gholston OLB Ohio State
1 30 (30) Dustin Keller TE Purdue
4 14 (113) Dwight Lowery CB San Jose State
5 27 (162) Erik Ainge QB Tennessee RETIRED
6 5 (171) Marcus Henry WR Kansas
7 4 (211) Nate Garner T Arkansas (With Dolphins)

Bills
http://sportsillustrated.cnn.com/football/2008/draft/teams/bills.html
1 11 (11) Leodis McKelvin CB Troy University
2 10 (41) James Hardy WR Indiana
3 9 (72) Chris Ellis DE Virginia Tech
4 15 (114) Reggie Corner DB Akron
4* 33 (132) Derek Fine TE Kansas
5 12 (147) Alvin Bowen OLB Iowa State
6 13 (179) Xavier Omon RB Northwest Missouri State
7 12 (219) Demetrius Bell T Northwestern State
7 17 (224) Steve Johnson WR Kentucky
7* 44 (251) Kennard Cox DB Pittsburgh

Looking at this, you could make a case the Dolphins had the most successful draft out of our rivals (maybe outside of the Bills) that year.

Correct and to the point. Making the Pro Bowl ain't all people make it out to be.

Never said the GM shares no blame. Just responding to what the OP said.

Parcells and Ireland were the final decision makers when it came to personnel so they share most if not all the blame.

Langford signed with St Louis as a UFA and Hilliard signed with Minnesota.

Damn, I didn't know Langford left... Oh well, in any case, we DID get production out of these guys over the last couple years. Thats more than can be said for our rivals' draft classes.

so we have 1 probowler in 4 drafts and its okay because we got some production???

man i know we have sucked for a long time but i didnt realize expectations were so low...

I understand your point on judging someone's merits by how many pro bowls they have gone to. I think if you want to look at the players he drafted/signed over the past 4 seasons and their contributions i see 11-5, 7-9, 7-9, and 6-10. We got rid of Sparano and he was apparently the problem; Jeff needs to show the vast amount of talent he has collected. I understand we do not know what was the power split between him and tuna, but he was there and he should be held accountable for every season. (maybe not to the weight of a normal gm, but it should carry some weight)

I am not talking about all drafts, just that particular draft. I think people are completely unrealistic about drafts. That fact is, its very RARE a draft classes will include even 2 pro bowlers. Its even more rare that even half a draft class sticks around for more than 5 years.

Go back and look at the Patriots recent drafts. Most are WORSE than the Dolphins' drafts. Its just that we weren't able to hit on the most important draft pick yet - the QB.
