Most of us realize that trading down in the draft is a very difficult task to pull off. Everything has to fall in the right place in order for it to work.

Based on need of other teams and our draft position in the first round, there is one team I noticed we could possibly work out a trade with come draft day, but that’s only if the other team feels that they have a definite need as well; and are willing to make the trade with us. Check out this trade scenario I see possible with the New Orleans Saints.

I’ve watched all of the Saints playoff games this year, and there is one GLARING position that needs an upgrade; and that’s the cornerback position. Their CB Fred Thomas is probably the worst starting cornerback I have ever seen in the NFL. He got torched on a regular basis while he knew they were going to pick on him all game. I won’t go as far as saying Norman LeJune, but I think Eddie Jackson has a chance to challenge Thomas for the starting spot over there. That’s how bad Thomas looked during the playoffs.

Since the Saints had great success this season, they realize how close they are to going the distance, and may be willing to trade up to get that one impact player for a position they are very weak in.

IMHO, Leon Hall, Marcus McCauley, and Darrelle Revis are those possible impact players and will be gone by the 29th or 30th pick, so trading up could be the right move for them. We are in the perfect spot of the draft for them to get the pick of the litter of cornerbacks.

I based these trades by using the draft value chart.

We trade our #1 for the Saints #1, #2, and a conditional pick next year.

We trade our #1 for the Saints #1, #2, and we swap our 3rd round picks.

We trade our #1 for the Saints #1, next season’s #1 (this is my favorite, but it probably would be the most difficult to get)

We trade our #1 for the Saints #1, next season #2 and #3.

Now if this trade went through, I would draft LT Aaron Sears at #29 or #30.

Any thoughts on this?

I agree with your logic. They need DB's and we have a draft position that is very conducive to taking the best DB in the draft. We get extra pick and we get a LT. Win win to me!

Good Job!

Depends upon how deep this year's cornerback crop is. I've heard it's actually quite deep, anyone else know? Aaron Sears projects as a right tackle in the NFL btw...

I agree with some of your points but I would add that: 1) There are going to be quite a few attractive FA at the DB position this year. The Saints have alot of room under the cap, and if Benson is willing to shell out the cash, they may take a run at a guy like Clements; and 2) Payton attended the Bill Parcells' school of football , and as such, probably will want to keep picks.

I'd love for it to happen but I seriously doubt it will. There is a good chance that all three of the top corners (Hall, Revis and McCauley) will be there when we pick and will all be gone when the Saints pick. I think a more realistic option would be for them to trade up only a few spots and get McCauley or Revis, who at this point both look like mid to late first rounders. I'm not a big fan of Leon Hall, but if the Saints fall in love with him for some reason I could see them making a move. They are already stacked with young talent so parting ways with an extra pick probably wouldn't be the end of the world for them.

I've heard the exact opposite.

Based on your trade scenarios, the Saints will have to give up a little more to move up to #9. I do like the two 1st but I'm not sure the Saints have to move up that far to get someone they like. Maybe they'll want Marcus McCauley instead of Hall or Revis.
I like Aaron Sears because he has played every position on the OL except center.

When did secondary get so good that we can pass up on a shut down CB. I like the idea of trading down and gettinng more picks, but the #29 is to far down we we need CB help ourself.

i rather get an impact player at 9...too early for draft trade scenarios too

Are you crazy????

And give up on a top ten pick for Aaron Sears???

:shakeno:

Basically you are giving up a top ten pick...for two 2nd rounders then?

Go to your corner...here's your dunce hat!:fire:

logic is great but there would be one or the other of the CB's at the 13-15 picks and it will be a whole lot less expensive than trading into the top 10-and thats IF they go DB with thier top pick they are becoming famous for giving players very lucrative contracts (Brees) and there is one Asante Samuals there and his eyes are open to making the $$$$ and the only thing that would keep him in NE is loyalty to the organisation-look for him to be in another jersey to whoever ponies up enough cash

Im not a fan of Leon Hall at all. CBs are very risky. I'd rather put Jason Allen at CB and draft Reggie Nelson if we want to improve the secondary.

Then again...WR is more of a need.

We should fix OL and OLB via FA...so...

GOOD POINT!

That's very true. I did not put that to consideration. They could very well go after Samuels and Clements via FA. i forgot the Saints have deep pockets this year as far as FA is concerned.

 Calm down.

I started this thread because there are a lot of people who were entertaining the idea of trading down. I was bored, so I decided to come up with a scenario for these people and see what comes out of it.

If you check my mock draft thread that I started two weeks, you'll see where my thoughts are on the draft for this team.

I agree, 29 may be a little too far down. I was just trying to find possible scenarios where we might me able to trade down with someone to get more picks and the Saints looked like a good canidate. Right now I don't see any other possibilities with other teams who might me interested in trading up to the #9 spot.
