Interesting Trend in Picks

Im not going to comment on whether the picks are good, I think you have to wait for that. But, I think there is an interesting common thread to the picks. Ireland likes to pick athletes with outstanding measurables. Tannehill, Martin, even Egnew. All freakish athletes. Not sure that translates all of the time, but it does seem to be his pattern.

It leads one to wonder if measurables are the like the moneyball strategy for football.

I agree, but I think that was a Parcells thing as well - he was obsessed with size. FWIW, I don't like this strategy. I think it is a bit like job interviewers resorting to psych exams - measurables are easy to measure so people get carried away with them.

I think a better strategy is simply to pick the best football players you can find, regardless of their measurables. Look for the guys who actually perform best on the field and make big plays and pick smart guys who are real gamers.

Not knocking the Tannehill pick, but basically this comes down to physical attributes rather than QB play, which is why Ireland got excited about him. Personally, I would have gone the other way, because this was pretty much the same reasoning they used when they drafted Henne. Hope I am wrong and will get behind Tannehill and the other picks 100%.

I agree. Though I also remember taking some players with poor measurables that we argued could just play. Remember the qb from Oklahoma? Or Pat White? Best case is a freak who has great tape. I suppose those are the ones taken by everyone. Then it becomes a projection. Tricky business.

We had a whole lot of holes to fill, more than most wanted to admit. Pretty much every position but RB needed either a starter or depth. That's a tall order to address in one season. I think we are drafting for need, but also for value. Martin was a great pick, even if Sanu or Randle graded out better at WR. Everyone needs to step back a bit.
