"Also signed was center Matt Spanos, a one-year starter at Southern California who had played every position on the Trojans' offensive line. Spanos, 6 feet 5 and 300 pounds, had an injury-plagued career, which was also interrupted because of academic problems."

20 Questions with USC's Matt Spanos

At USC's Pro Day, Spanos measured 6'5 3/8" and weighed 322 pounds. He ran a 5.28 in the 40 and did 20 reps on the bench press. He is built more like an OT then a Center.

What NFL player do you do you think you compare favorably to?

Matt Spanos: I’d have to say Olin Kruetz of the Chicago Bears. He is a big, mean, and very smart player. He has been one of the best for many years now. Obviously, my skills are not up to where his are right now, but I believe I compare well to him.

Who is the best player you have faced during your college football career?

Matt Spanos: Sedrick Ellis. He’s the most dominant defensive tackle in NCAA. I think he is even better than Glenn Dorsey. Dorsey is a phenomenal player, but Sedrick is definitely the best I’ve ever seen.

I like the signing. I'm a big USC fan so I got to see Spanos a lot. He was good, he wasn't spectacular or anything but he never got beat bad in games. He was a good run blocker too. He can come in and be a good backup and if he comes in and improves his strength than maybe over time he can develop into something more.

20 reps is not even average strength, even if his arms are long. Jake Long did 37. He may be a practice squad for a year and then be turned over.

I am not disputing the first part, but Jake's 37 is not just above "average" and is a very very high standard of comparison.

It's obvious he had academic problems...he has a mohawk.

Oh, I agree. Long's 37 was highest at combine. I just used Long's number as an illustration of Spanos at the low end. I would imagine that around 30 would be more average. My point is that Spanos is way off. Maybe his functional strength is better but I seriously doubt it.
