Ireland believes Ryan Tannehill's talent level compares favorably with Luck and RGIII

If you define talent as physical characteristics, then what Jeff is saying is nothing new. Ryan has a prototypical build and athleticism that is off the charts. What dear old Jeff is trying to gloss over is that his decision making skills and pre-snap awareness are not in the same league with guys like Luck and RG3. However, you have to really like the fact that he is tranitioning into an offence that he already knows forwards and backwards.

Ireland would make a fantastic politician.

If you want to come to Pittsburgh, I'll be waiting.

I think some people are taking the quote a little out of context or just misunderstanding it.

Much like when McShay said that Tannehill had more potential than Matt Barkley he wasn't wrong. Barkley is a better prospect, but Tanny does have a lot more potential because he is far from a finished prospect.

Athletically, Tanny has all the physical qualities you want in a QB and he physically isn't that far off from either of those 2.

And I care because Ireland has such an outstanding record of talent evaluation...

The pick had more to do with Philbin and Sherman's evaluation of Tannehill...Ireland is just going along for the ride and throwing his 2 cents in.

Nothing is taken out of context here. It's unwise for him to make this type of comparison at all in order to justify the pick. Competent personnel people don't do this.

It puts all the pressure on Tannehill rather than on Ireland.

Ryan Tannehill doesn't have more potential as a quarterback than Matt Barkley. Todd McShay isn't right.

The only thing that's even remotely correct here is that Tannehill is a better athlete than Barkley... just like Pat White, Isaiah Stanback, Marcus Vick, Brad Smith, Eric Crouch, and a host of others were more athletic than Tom Brady, Drew Brees, Peyton Manning, or Matt Ryan. It has no bearing on potential to play the quarterback position.

This is nothing more than an attempt to spin athletic upside as the same thing as quarterback potential. They're two completely different things.

If you listen to Ireland he scouted Tannehill extensively for some time so he knows a lot more about him than what Sherman has told him.

Maybe he is trying to keep all criticism directed at him and not the new coaching staff? Just a thought...

Dolphins GM Jeff Ireland believes Ryan Tannehill's talent level compares favorably with Andrew Luck and Robert Griffin III.
"If had we eight to 10 more games of film to watch Ryan Tannehill play that position, I think we're looking at him in the same breath as Griffin and maybe Luck," Ireland said. "I think he's got that kind of ability and arm talent." Although Ireland also suggested the Dolphins had been targeting Tannehill since the beginning of the offseason, he refuses to predict when the rookie will be ready to take over as the starter. Well he better believe it cause hes going to live or die by Tannehill. He's not getting anymore passes the way he did with Henne. Nope, you picked this guy @ #8 and you're locked in for life.
