IRELAND: Didn't feel like we needed a new starting quarterback

Proof is in the pudding as they say so I look at it as Ireland just put his butt on the line for Henne in making a public comment like this. While I value the input of all the football puntiffs on the site I find it refreshing a bit to see Ireland put his mouth where his pick is. Henne may be the huge mistake that so many of the fans are claiming but except for the OL and QB position Ireland has stocked this team well through the draft.

I don't buy it, because he didn't bring competition in. Contrary to what was said by the owner and the perception everybody had from this organization most of the offseason.

In my opinion he screwed up, and is now....much like a politician, adapting his stance to the mess he made.

ie.....since he failed to get a real quarterback.....now he is HAPPY with Chad Henne and NEVER was looking to replace him.

Much like Stephen Ross trying to make the huddled masses believe that he didn't really try to replace Sparano....did you buy that one too?

Ross is less believable, imo. and while it's possible that Ireland is back tracking, he may be telling the truth.
if Ireland really wanted someone to chalenge Henne, there were options and he really didn't pursue anyone that hard. he definitely could have had Orton, but he would have had to pay the Broncos and Orton himself starter compensation. same with Kolb. trading up 5 spots for Gabbert was possible, so was taking Mallet two different times. by not pulling the trigger on anyone, it would appear that he was only looking for a back-up

There's a difference between his actions, and his ''reported by the media'' actions...

Again, his actions over these months in NO WAY match this stance.

They looked at drafting a developmental quarterback, but never intended to replace Henne this year with a rookie. The looked at adding Orton to push Henne, but part of the reason the trade fell apart is because Orton wanted starter money. Miami didn't view him that way. Henne always seemed to be their plan for 2011.

This is the part that pisses me off. :oldman:

And this is why they'll fail, should have traded for Orton.

Just a few short weeks ago, it was reported nationally and everybody on this board was sure Kyle Orton was coming here. There can be little doubt he would have beaten out Henne.

The question to me is whether Ireland has the balls to invest highly in the quarterback position, because there can be no doubt he tried to get Orton...he just didn't get him at the price he wanted him.

Well no duh, no one expects a rookie to start right away...but he left himself with no real plan B there, and the only place Orton would have pushed Henne was to the bench.

It was reported by the media and "everyone", except from the Broncos and Dolphins. Everyone expected that Orton would beat out Henne, however the Dolphins apparently did not feel the same.

yea, ie the reason why we will never be more than mediocre with this regime in place

Happy with a below average qb. Happy with Brian F'n Hartline starting at receiver.

These are not things to be happy about. These are things that need to be replaced the first shot you get.

If that is true then we seriously have to question Ireland and his ability to evaluate quarterbacks (Not that Drafting White and Henne isn't enough to warrant it), because there can be little doubt Orton is much better than Henne.

Here is the thing, I don't think Ireland's seat is as hot as some might think. In fact, I think it is ice cold. I think he wants to replace Henne, but didn't see any major upgrades in the draft or free agency/trades. Next year is a much better draft class and I think he is planning on getting someone next year. Doesn't mean he is trying to "suck for Luck", but he just might see better available options next year. He obviously feels comfortable that the Dolphins can compete for the playoffs this year and didn't think any player was worth the draft picks and money it would have taken, especially if they were not any better than Henne.

Pat White was all Parcells.

i am really glad we didn't get Orton he's not a franchise QB

Vince Young has looked terrible vs 2nd stringers

Mallet is well what we knew about Mallet .... he can't handle pressure or blitzes just go watch preseason game no.2 ( i would've wanted Mallet to groom tho)

i am extremely happy with Henne and his progress this pre season he seems totally changed
