Of the 24 selections Ireland made, 23 of them made the active roster out of training camp (the lone exception spent the season on injured reserve) and 18 were in uniform last Sunday when the Cowboys hosted the New York Giants in the playoffs.

Parcells became head coach two years before Ireland, then the team's national scout, took over the draft. Parcells resigned before Ireland's final draft with Dallas.

In that five-year span, 25 of the Cowboys' 39 draft picks were good enough to make last weekend's playoff roster. Ten of them started. An 11th draftee, Nick Folk, was the kicker. Eight others were acquired as free agents, leaving only four playoff starters who pre-dated Parcells and Ireland.

if he could do for us what he did for them in 2005 - oh baby. imagine how much better our defense would instantly get.

We basically now have the same people here right now. So......

"In building the new Dolphins infrastructure, Parcells is going with whom he knows. He lassoed Cowboys director of college and pro scouting Jeff Ireland to be the Dolphins GM and Cowboys assistant head coach Tony Sparano to be head coach.
New quarterbacks coach David Lee held the same position under Parcells in Dallas. Brian Gaine, who will be Ireland's top assistant, left the Cowboys on Tuesday.
Parcells is relying on a crew that helped him improve a team that went 5-11 three years in a row before he took over. They reached the playoffs in two of his four years and went on to post the NFC's best record the year after he left.
"Those are his people," said Larry Lacewell, who ran Dallas' drafts for 12 years before retiring in 2005 after a clash of wills with Parcells. Ireland was Lacewell's replacement. "He hired David Lee. He hired Sparano. He hired Gaine. This is his show more than it is a Cowboys deal."

That's impressive. Even most of the guys that didn't catch on w/the Cowboys caught on elsewhere in the NFL. Man, April is so far away!

if we start drafting like we actually know how to evaluate college talent the playoffs might only be 2-3 years away. last year wasnt bad - love the satele pick up - so who knows. i want beau bell bad. talib too. philips too. not possible, but i can dream.

from what was written about Jacob Rogers, these are not totally his stats

not to take away from your thread, good info dude

I'm told Ireland tried to talk Parcells out of drafting USC left tackle Jacob Rogers before the 2004 draft, but was overruled. The Cowboys drafted Rogers as the No. 52 overall pick, and to my knowledge, he never played an offensive snap.

What jumps out at me on that list, is that all of the higher picks in the last 3 years that should make the team and contribute, appear to be doing so. You can get an approving nod around the NFL for hitting on a late round pick, but almost nobody does that consistently.

Contrast taking a player at #1 overall, handing him $35mil, and watching him fall flat on his face vs. trading down twice and trying to attack the draft with volume--5 or 6 picks in the first three rounds plus a player or two. I know what I'm more comfortable with. Either way, can't wait for Ireland to do his stuff. Aqua on the rise!

Lets hope he continues this trend of good drafting. The Dolphins could use a good draft we havent had one in a while.

i am praying that we trade down but everyone says it isnt gonna happen? why? theres no clear #1 out there and tons of early round talent. dallas or detrot would be beautiful. fasano, williams,... + picks or rogers, williams,..... + picks. i want to gather as many draft picks as possible - especially if they know how to draft and who they want to fit our system.

Rogers was a really good OT at USC, but was injury prone, never made it to camp with injuries, and retired after his rookie year. Shame, he was a very good prospect.

Could've sworn Stephen Peterman was still on the Boys roster. Al Johnson also turned into a decent C in Zona this year. I think Sean Ryan is with the Jets now but not sure.

Still, look at how many of those guys either stayed with the Cowboys, or are contributors to other teams is impressive, then you compare it to our drafts in the same time frame.... on second thought, don't do that.

we probably won't trade the first pick, but 32 is likely to be traded.

I really enjoyed this thread until I noticed that this encompasses 5 years of draft picks...the same span of time that Wanny completely wasted. If I am correct, not one person on our current roster was drafted by Wanny. NOT ONE! Thank goodness we are headed in a better direction now. It is going to take a while but it will be so encouraging to actually show improvement year over year rather than sinking further into the abyss.

good stats...getting more and more excited for the draft now

Lets just pray that he can pull off some of the same magic in miami because we have not been able to evaluate any talent since jimmy johnson left. As much as I never liked him he could evaluate defensive talent...
