Using Pro-Football-Reference.com, I analyzed the Ireland and Tannenbaum drafts for their respective teams. I primarily rated them based on the CarAV (Weighted Career Approximate Value) listed below:

Glossary of Terms:
AP1 = First Team All-Pro Selections
PB = # of Pro Bowls
ST = # of Years as Primary Starter
G = Games Played

CarAV = Weighted Career Approximate Value (The higher the better)
From the looks of it, a CarAV between:
15 to 30 = an average multi-year starter (ie., Reshad Jones (25), Jared Odrick (20))
30 to 50 = a good multi-year starter (ie., Ronnie Brown (41), Vernon Carey (45), Yeremiah Bell (43))
50 & above = an great multi-year starter (ie., Jason Taylor (109), Sam Madison (85), Chris Chambers (57))

From this analysis, they rank as follows:

GREAT multi-year starters:
- Ireland: 1
- Tannenbaum: 4
ADVANTAGE TANNENBAUM

GOOD multi-year starters:
- Ireland: 6
- Tannenbaum: 3
ADVANTAGE IRELAND

AVERAGE multi-year starters:
- Ireland: 8
- Tannenbaum: 10
ADVANTAGE TANNENBAUM

Overall: Tannenbaum drafted more elite players, Ireland drafted more solid multi-year contributors. Tannenbaum Wins!

Based on the CarAV metrics, Ireland's draft breaks down like this:

GREAT multi-year starters: 1
- Jake Long (55 CarAV)

GOOD multi-year starters: 6
- Ryan Tannehill (32 CarAV)
- Mike Pouncey (30 CarAV)
- Vontae Davis (34 CarAV)
- Sean Smith (32 CarAV)
- Brian Hartline (30 CarAV)
- Kendall Langford (36 CarAV)

AVERAGE multi-year starters: 8
- Olivier Vernon (16 CarAV)
- Lamar Miller (18 CarAV)
- Jared Odrick (20 CarAV)
- Koa Misi (26 CarAV)
- John Jerry (26 CarAV)
- Reshad Jones (25 CarAV)
- Chris Clemons (20 CarAV)
- Chad Henne (27 CarAV)

A few caveats on this:

- QBs and OL seem to be a bit skewed due to the amount of snaps they play
- Obviously, the longer a player plays, the better their CarAV will be, so guys drafted in 2014 could easily bump up a level based on playing time
- This includes the player's career after leaving the Dolphins as well, thus why John Jerry seems to have a higher CarAV than Reshad Jones

Based on the above analysis, the drafts are worse than I had thought. Only ONE impact player (Long) drafted in 6 drafts, and he ended up an injury-riddled cast off in just a few years. To boot, he was the first overall pick.

It does seem that he got good value in later rounds, but the first round picks usually just ended up with good/average players, while the 2nd rounds usually just netted outright busts.

The TANNENBAUM Drafts

- Nick Mangold (64 CarAV)

GOOD multi-year starters: 3
- Muhammed Wilkerson (31 CarAV)
- Mark Sanchez (33 CarAV)
- Leon Washington (30 CarAV)

AVERAGE multi-year starters: 10
- Quinton Coples (17 CarAV)
- Demario Davis (20 CarAV)
- Jeremy Kerley (16 CarAV)
- Kyle Wilson (15 CarAV)
- Shonn Green (23 CarAV)
- Matt Slauson (25 CarAV)
- Dustin Keller (22 CarAV)
- Dwight Lowery (25 CarAV)
- Eric Smith (17 CarAV)
- Brad Smith (17 CarAV)

Awesome work! I really enjoyed the comparison. I still can't figure out how Ireland was able to find talent late in the draft and in UDFA, but could not pick for crap early in the draft. I think ultimately Tannenbaum will have his finger prints on this draft, and I hope it works out. Thanks again for the read!

All I can think about right now is 2013 when we had a dream 5 picks in the first three rounds and all we have to show for those picks are Dion Jordan, Jamar Taylor (may be decent, but he's had injury troubles which should have been known) Dallas Thomas and Will Davis. He should be arrested for this alone.

so why are u mad at Ireland ??. he was ok not bad but not great. if u want be made at GM. go back from 2001- 2007. that who kill dolphins.

To be fair, Tannebaum has one more year of drafting so you'd expect him to have drafted 14% more talent that Fireland. Alos he had 9 first round pick in that time frame to Fireland's 6.

Like choosing Acid Reflux over Diverticulitis :idk:

You funny man!

I think one pick-Revis really skews this in Mike's favour. It's not like he found a lot of great players, just one really good one that has been to a bunch of Pro Bowls.

True, but the main knock on Ireland is the lack of elite talent drafted on his watch. That's where Tanenbaum wins it. I think overall, Ireland was better at drafting solid contributors in the later rounds. That's good if you want to go 8-8 every year, but not as good if you want to get over the hump. Tannenbaum's track record does lead to a boom or bust season though due to the lack of solid talent across the board on the roster.

Also, both Tannenbaum and Ireland had an epic passrushing bust in the first round: Jordan and Gholston.

Should I take solace that Tannenbaum's only first round bust is Gholston?

Kyle Wilson and Quinton Coples would also be considered first round busts. Ireland actually had a better track record in Round 1, he only had one true bust (Jordan) the rest were solid multi-year contributors.

If they are avg. starters are they complete busts? Disappointing maybe, but certainly not on Jordan's level when it comes to bust. Especially Coples. He's been serviceable averaging 6 sacks a year.

I Will forever be glad Ireland picked one guy ...... Tannehill

True, but they are really on the cusp. Wilson is right at 15 CarAVG. I'm skewed on that one because I've heard WFAN host Joe Benigno rag on Wilson for several years. He always ragged on him.
