I think we all want this to be the case, but we have been down this road before with Sporano and others. See how he fares this year and if the trajectory is upwards, then it will instill more confidence.

Today's question: Adam Gase is the second-youngest head coach in the NFL and he took advantage of a last-place schedule to win 10 games in 2016. Is Gase the long-term solution for the Dolphins or is he a one-year wonder?

DK, I've never been so sure about our coaching future since the young Don days.

Sparano's "success" was directly related to the gimmick wild-cat. After that was figured out (& Penningtons' eventual demise), Sparano had nothing left.

Saban was the closest we had to a "real" HC (since Don of course) but he just couldn't deal with men.

I gotta give Ross credit for EVENTUALLY getting it right. Thank God Jeff Fisher turned us down. THANK GOD!

It's really nice to think DOLPHIN football & not even have a passing thought regarding our HC having a freakin clue. SO NICE...

Certainly appears so at the moment. Even if he bombed this year....while I'd be confused, I'd want to see him come back next year...pretty sure Ross would too given his steady hand (e.g. lack of knee jerk reaction/firings)

We didn't win TEN games with Jones, Pouncey, and Misi, missing substantial time with talent.

Don't forget about winning games that we had to win down the stretch, with a BACK-UP QB.... on top of the guys you mentioned being out.

Gase is here to stay for awhile...

Yes. For some reason my gut is telling me that we're still a year away from having the new foundation truly in place. I'm setting my expectations for this season below 10 wins, and I'm okay with that. The main reason is the schedule. Look at the stretch between October 26 and December 11. It's pretty brutal. A contending team should come out ahead there, but I just don't have that confidence yet. Also, during the easier, early stretch of the schedule the team has to travel to London (losing a true home game in the process). I also think the front office needs another year of player acquisition before the Dolphins become a true force in the AFC.

I'm trying to take the long view, and for me this season is mostly about Gase. Never mind the personnel gaps. What will the team look like as it navigates this very difficult schedule, with a roster that still feels thin? What will happen to the team if injuries to critical players pile up? I'm excited to learn more about how this young coach will handle the adversity of this season.

I've been looking ahead to the 2018 season since Gase was hired, and this middle season feels like the critical pivot point that will determine whether 2018 is a contending year, or just another tease of mediocrity. Most of all, I'm looking forward to the day when I'm wondering how our coach will handle a team that's tasted success under his leadership.

Got to love how writers throw that last place schedule around like it means something. It's 2 games difference between the top team in the east and the bottom team. And in any given year the top team can have a easyer schedule at the end.

I'd argue it had more to do with a healthy Chad Pennington (one of only 2 or 3 seasons where he played the entire year if I recall correctly), the next year we returned to earth with crappy coaching, a crappy GM, and a crappy QB. Oh, and crappy receivers too lol. But, the wildcat did catch a lot of teams off guard early on, so it did certainly help and/or contribute to some of the marks in the W column that year.

This team doesn't even SLIGHTLY resemble the overachieving 08' team, one year removed from the biggest embarrassment in franchise history. Gase was just about as successful an OC as you can be, highly regarded, etc etc. Sparano was a big fat meatball that was a Parcells guy and other than coaching under Parcells had nothing on his resume that was even remotely interesting before being hired.

Adam Gase did something very Don Shula like last year. He kept winning despite losing a lot of players to injury including a quarterback who was playing very well at that point in the season. That says a lot right there.

I know it's early to put a stamp on it and say Gase is the man, but all indications look like he is.

His pluses include having the pulse of the team, knowing when to release players, demanding that players produce or they find the bench, knowing how to scheme on offense, and his high energy which is contagious. Ultimately, I think he'll have to put his stamp/imprint on both sides of the ball and I think he's taking steps in that direction.

The Meatball won with The Big Tuna in his ear from up above. Once Parcells lost interest in the day to day when it looked like his potential to hire himself out as a "Franchise Rebuilder" deflated, Sparano was on his own and reverting to making il-advised and stupid decisions. It wouldn't have taken Gase 2 humiliating national defense and special teams showings to fire Pasqualoni and Bonemego.. He could be the smartest and most strategic, out of the box thinking coach we've had since Shula. Comparing Gase to Sparano is like comparing Tony Bennett to Milli Vanilli!

There are so many reasons why the Gase success was no mirage...

1. Over coming a 1-4 start.
(Proving even at it's worst point, he never lost the team)

2. Getting into a huge winning streak when they needed it most.
(Proving that the culture of the team was already changing)

3. Winning most of those games during the winning streak normally at the end.
(Proving one of the biggest changes was, there was no longer any quit in this team)

4. Winning games without one of their best defensive players in Jones, injuries to the corner position all year, losing one of their best Linemen in Pouncey for the year, no real starting talent at LB other then Alonzo thanks to injuries, and losing a very hot starting QB for the last few games of the season.
(Proving there was never any panic in Miami, just a next man up mentality)

5. From day one, players no longer played as individuals, and all were held to high expectation at practice as well as games, if you did not produce, you were let go.
(Proving that the mentality of the team was now to play as one, and each held to high expectations for the others as well as themselves)

Each of those proved how well Gase was able to turn the mindset of a team that only a year ago would have given up after starting 1-4, would have normally lost if in a close game, would have started to show panic if the injuries started to pile up, but to me, one of the biggest indication of why Gase will not fail, happened in the Jets 2nd game.

Miami is pretty much crushing the Jets late in the 4th quarter, Moore throws a deep pass, and misses the completion, Gase on the sidelines was going crazy, he looked beyond upset. During the whole season he was like that when Miami won, and you could see that he was not satisfied, because the only things that seem to stick with him in the games was the moments of failure. To Gase, winning games comes 2nd to playing like a championship team (Mistake free)... and that is how championship teams are Built.
