I'm sure I'm in the great minority here but I am really not pleased with the signing of Joey Porter (for the record, I truly hope I am eating my words come next season).

Unlike some, I have been happy to see all of our underachievers released or traded (Jeno James, McMike, Wilkonson, etc.) because I do feel that our team needs an infusion of youth and cap space....something we've been lacking for years.

Now we take this newly acquired cap space and give it to Porter who I think the following of:

1) His best days are behind him,
2) As far as I know, the Steelers didn't make much of an effort to resign him (which has to tell us something),
3) Is way overpriced,
4) is an overhyped gangster with some serious character issues (mind you I do like his aggressiveness but I think he is way past simply being an aggressive baller).

Like I said, I'm sure I'll be in the vast minority on this one but I really do feel that we could have used our cap space in a better manner. Anybody in agreement or will I simply be flamed for these thoughts?

yes you are in the minority here. Like him or not, he's a pretty good LB. And he's a huge upgrade over what we have at that spot currently. Is he worth the contract he signed? Who knows. But I think it's worth finding out versus knowing that you have a mediocre LB opposite Zach and Crowder. And he'll make JT even more dangerous with other teams having to worry about someone else possibly coming to get them in their backfield. I didn't like him before he signed with us and yes, he talks too much at times. But I'll take the ego that goes with all that talent and intensity. We have a lot of work to do yet on the offensive side, but I think this signing makes us MUCH better on the def side. I'm hoping the FO gets at least a couple more decent holes filled in f/a before the draft so we can really do well there with all the picks we have. I'm excited we're finally trying NEW things to make us better, even if that's making some of us very nervous right now!!!

Anyone who thinks that Joey Porter is NOT an upgrade over Donnie Spragan, is just flat out insane. For the love of god, it was like we had 10 people playing on our defense, and we still had a top 4 defense.

Joey Porter had the same type of season as his previous pro bowl year, except he missed out 2 games due to injury. He is an excellent pass rusher, and with Zach, Jason, Channing; it will get much easier to hit our target - the opposing QB.

LOL we should start making Joey Porter support badges i think we have a hater here.

you were listening to Lebatard and Stu Gotts werent you?
first, his best days are not behind him. This is BS. Zach Thomas is older and still producing better than ever before. The arguement about him only making 0-1-2 tackles is lame. Overpriced? I dont think so. The market dictates what is overpaid. Mcmicheal was overpaid. Porter backs up his talk and makes big plays. Overhyped gangster? Who made that one up? The steelers not resigning him does not mean anything because 1) they have a new coach and is changing back to a 4-3 2) The steelers are cheap with a cheap owner

Now if someone wants to argue that Porter is not great, you may have an argument there.

But I dont think this is about being great. Its about being the right fit and knowing what it is that he provides. A great pass rush and covering ability. He is above average LB. It is amazing to me that anyone New England snags is a great move, but anything the fins touch is stupid move.

It's not only his pass rushing skills, his blitzes, his tackles. It's also his leadership. The guy is a very vocal player. He rallies his teammates together and gets them ready for every Sunday.

1.) His best days are behind him, based on what? Age? Please. Jason Taylor is 32.

2.) That's because he left on semi-bad terms. He wanted a raise in pay; they didn't see that necessary. Why would they try and sign a guy who doesn't wonna be there? Pointless.

3.) Overpriced? He's the same age as Adalius Thomas, and has been much more consistent year in, year out. Did you see Adalius Thomas' dead? It's bigger, yet I think they got the exact same amount in guarantees. Man, this market is overpriced, PERIOD. There is no longer a steady definition for "overpaid" in professional sports. Every year, the contracts get bigger and bigger.

4.) You lost a ton of respect for that comment. In fact, all respect. Why the hell do you look at Joey Porter as a gangster? Do you think his leadership skills and challenging of his own teammates accumulates to him being a GANGSTER? This should gain an INTERESTING answer. :rolleyes2

Nah, dead serious.. I really, really, really want an answer for #4. That's RIDICULOUS.

WTF are ya talkin about!!! Porter is 29 and he has like 6 7 years!! See Seau, Edwards, ZT, Simeon, There aging and playing great games !! woow shame on yaaa

What makes Joey Porter a overhyped "gangsta"? He has had no problems with the law, or drugs nor has he been on a substance abuse program with the league. So he got in some fist fight during pregames, DOES NOT mean he is a gangsta. I dont know if anyone remembers but the guy single handled beat us on opening night. He is 30 years old or will be, Zach Thomas is how old? In my eyes I love his on the field tantics, its better than having a player who cant stop hitting his wife or driving under the influence. I think Porter will bring a toughness and nastiness to our defense that will make other teams think twice before opening their mouths during the week. So I would hold the "gansta" label unless you mean he is a gansta on the field with that i can live with. Just a thought.

I'm happy we picked him up. He's a playmaker period. Porter, Thomas and Crowder ( 4/3 =Taylor 4th lbr)will be one hell of foursome....I can't wait to see these guys at work in Capers Defense...Feel the Pain!

4) is an overhyped gangster with some serious character issues (mind you I do like his aggressiveness but I think he is way past simply being an aggressive baller).

That was a very stupid thing to say.
:rolleyes2

It can be said that Porter is a vast upgrade from what the Dolphins had playing at linebacker. If you break down what he'll really get...20 mil over 5 years guaranteed money....thats only 4 mil a season.

As long as he can stay healthy....thats a steal.

As for "his best days are behind him"... We got Junior Seau in his 14th season, yet he was a great Fin for 3 years. The scheme that the Steelers ran last year didn't allow Joey to do the things he did the previous years. I'm possitive Joey has plenty more gas in the tank, and our system will be perfect for his style of play.

There is STILL plenty of cap space left. I like the Porter signing, though getting him for LESS money would (as always) have been nice.

1) His best days are behind him,
He's 29, so he should have a good 3-4 years left, look at Zach at 34.

2) As far as I know, the Steelers didn't make much of an effort to resign him (which has to tell us something),
Tells me they needed the cap space, that they are converting to a more Cover 2 defense.

3) Is way overpriced,
EVERYONE is overpriced this year, thanks to that extra cap space. Sadly, in two years, Porters deal may look like a bargain.

4) is an overhyped gangster with some serious character issues (mind you I do like his aggressiveness but I think he is way past simply being an aggressive baller).
I've never seen anything about Porter being a locker room cancer, or that he does worse than run his mouth during games.

I think he will fit VERY WELL in this 3-4 defense, which has lacked a good pass rushing OLB to pair with Taylor.
